Is Benefiber ok to give to a woman who is currently breastfeeding?

Is there an adverse affect on the baby if the mother takes Benefiber? I've been cooking with Benefiber and including Benefiber in my wife's water. She is fairly overweight so i thought this combined with the breastfeeding would allow her to lose some pounds.

I am currently breastfeeding and was taking something similar to benefiber and it really messed me up. It did not seem to affect the baby, but it made me verrrry constipated and caused me to have very, very painful bowel movements. Since breastfeeding depletes your fluids, you are left sort of dehydrated by benefiber type products, which then makes you constipated and hardens your stools---which leads to other serious problems.

If you are concerned about her weight. I would focus on that later. Breastfeeding alone will help her to lose weight slowly. My baby s three months old and I have lost 46 lbs and only gained 26 during my pregnancy. Focus on having her eat healthy balanced meals and don't try to limit her food either.

I don't know why you think it would make her lose weight or be a healthy way to do it, but. It will not hurt the baby. Re. the first answer, Mom would end up nutrient-deficient long before baby would.

"This type of laxative is not absorbed via the GI tract and thus should not pose a problem for breastfeeding mothers."

if you give her too much it could cause her not to properly absorb the nutrients from her foods and that would be unhealthy for her and the baby.
