Breastfeeding 5 month old and no matter what i eat i'm still starving!?

I am breastfeeding my 5 month old baby and have been following my usual high protein low carb diet. I"m not dieting thats just how I always try and eat. I can't seem to get full and am always craving sweets/desert etc. Would a high carb diet be better for me? Should i introduce more oats/bread etc?

While breastfeeding you should eat a balanced diet...it takes a lot out of you, and carbs are what give us energy. That's why you are craving sweets and deserts, because your body needs the sugars. Instead of those, which will cause you to gain lots of weight...make sure to introduce some whole grain breads, and perhaps cereals and starchy veggies to your diet. It'll benefit both you and your baby. Good luck.

This is a traditional diet, but you might get some good ideas for some nutritious filling food.

Diet for Pregnant and Nursing Mothers
Cod Liver Oil to supply 20,000 IU vitamin A and 2000 IU vitamin D per day

1 quart (or 32 ounces) whole milk daily, preferably raw and from pasture-fed cows (learn more about raw milk on our website, A Campaign for Real Milk, www.realmilk.com)

4 tablespoons butter daily, preferably from pasture-fed cows

2 or more eggs daily, preferably from pastured chickens

Additional egg yolks daily, added to smoothies, salad dressings, scrambled eggs, etc.
3-4 ounces fresh liver, once or twice per week (If you have been told to avoid liver for fear of getting "too much Vitamin A," be sure to read Vitamin A Saga)

Fresh seafood, 2-4 times per week, particularly wild salmon, shellfish and fish eggs

Fresh beef or lamb daily, always consumed with the fat

Oily fish or lard daily, for vitamin D

2 tablespoons coconut oil daily, used in cooking or smoothies, etc.

Lacto-fermented condiments and beverages

Bone broths used in soups, stews and sauces

Soaked whole grains

Fresh vegetables and fruits

AVOID:
Trans fatty acids (e.g., hydrogenated oils)
Junk foods
Commercial fried foods
Sugar
White flour
Soft drinks
Caffeine
Alcohol
Cigarettes
Drugs (even prescription drugs)

I have the SAME PROBLEM!! Are you still taking your prenatal vitamins? (I haven't been because ever since my son was born, he's 6 1/2 months, I just forget.)
My sister works in a women's health clinic and the OB there said that if I was still taking my prenatal vitamins I wouldn't be so hungry all the time. I started taking them again today and surprisingly enough, I wasn't that hungry today. It might have been a psychological thing but hey, I wasn't starving for food!!!

OMG!! I am having the same problem! I am breastfeeding my 3 month old and I feel like I am ALWAYS hungry! I think I'm going crazy, LOL I try drinking water and eating sensibly but I feel like I can't get full, I only gained 8 pounds in my pregnancy and then lost 23 after the baby was born, but I know that I have gained some weight back. I think that as long as the carbs you are eating are not refined white flour and with high fructose corn syrup, you should get full easier. Try flax, real whole wheat (no high fructose) or sprouted wheat bread, and LOTS of fruits and veggies and plenty of water. I hope this helps because I am in the same boat!! Good luck and God bless!!

oops I meant to thumbs down the supplementing, no need to supplement and this question isnt about if shes making enough milk, its all hormones, try eating oats in the morning with a mango or raspberries. Smoothie shakes are really good for a afternoon snack as well, can be low carb and it hits the sweet tooth.

I thought I was the only one!!!! My daughter is 3.5 moths old and I always seem to be starving. Anything I see on t.v. practically makes me drool. I don't think I am gaining weight but I can never seem to stay full for more that 2-3 hours.

I would try upping your water intake and your healthy whole grain intake and see how you feel.

It could just be that you aren't getting enough calories overall or you could be missing something specific in grains.

I would try to eat a more balanced diet, with a mix of carbs and proteins.

make sure you are Drinking plenty of water and other fluids. Ask your Dr what is the best diet. But you need to make sure your baby is getting enough milk and nutrient's. If not you might need to supplement
