My maby just started nipping while breastfeeding, what can I do?

My baby is 4 months old and she is biting down and pulling at the breast alot and biting the nipple with her gums. And then there are times when she feeds and then goes to sleep as she has always done/ my nipples are getting sore, do they toughen up for when she starts to get teeth or is there a way I can get her to stop?

My son did this as much as it can hurt whatever you do dont stop breastfeeding. You can get herout of doing this by removing her from your breast everytime she does it and firmly saying "no". It may take a few times but shell reltate having to stop nursing whith the biting. Good luck and try and stick with it. My son only did this a few days and then never again

Your baby is probably teething. You don't want to scream or yell out when this occurs because according to the La Leche League International, one of the most common reasons for a nursing strike is, in an older baby, the baby is afraid Mom will scream. This is common when your teething baby bites and you react by yelling.
Here are some recommended ways to overcome this problem.
1. Nurse in motion. Some babies are more likely to nurse more relaxed, when you rock or walk them than when you're sitting or standing still.
2. When the baby bites, detach her with your finger and say "all done" And sit her up for a while. She will learn fast.
3. Lightly tap the cheek tell them no and take off your breast right away and lay the baby beside you or on the floor, in a few minutes try to nurse again. Repeat the process everytime they clamps down.
The earlier you train them the better, before their teeth come in.

When my son was first teething he started to get a bit nippy. I would withdraw the breast and make a very startling noise when he would bite down, sometimes set him on the floor. Be sure you don't pull away while she's still clamping down though! Ow! To get my baby to release, I'd pull his face in tight to the breast so he'd have to open up and back off to breath - or gently pinch his nose shut, heh. He would also drift off and slide down towards the nipple creating soreness. I found I just had to watch this - keeping him well supported and not sliding down to the end. Make sure she keeps a good mouthful of breast, and if she's slid down, relatch her. When they've got a good mouthful, they can't really bite down painfully, they've got to slide down, so pull her head back in when she's trying to pull in the other direction, or slip your finger in to pull her off without tugging your nipple. Don't think your nipples will just toughen - you need to take care of them. Even after you've been nursing a while, when a baby starts a new behavior like this, they can end up raw, cracked and bleeding.

The best thing is when she bites or pulls, tell her very sternly "No", then pull her off the breast for a few seconds. Try not to cry out when she bites, she will find the response facinating and bite more.

Just repeat saying "No" and taking her off the breast for a few seconds whenever she bites or pulls and she will learn very quickly not to bite.

tell her "no", she should know what that means by now. Good luck, hope it works out for you. My kids only did that a bit and then they stopped. Not sure what to do if it continues.

I dont know. My son did that and I had to quit nursing him because is was so painful. Maybe give her a teething ring during the day at the time when she likes to bite and it will curb her from biting you.

She can't bite and suck at the same time. When she does it, tell her, NO and remove her from the breast. After a few times she'll get the lesson that you don't want her to do that.

Whenever she bites you just take her away from your nipple and wait for a little while before putting her back. Hopefully she will learn a lesson.

they make nipple shields. i have never used them but i hear they work.
