Breastfeeding Moms: When did your cycle start again?

I breastfed my son and got my period at about 4 months pp. I'm breastfeeding my baby girl and I'm almost 7 months pp now and haven't had a cycle. Is this normal or should I call my Dr.?

Thanks in advance.

It's absolutely normal for the return of your menses to be delayed by breastfeeding, especially if you are nursing exclusively with no supplementation. The progesterone your body produces while nursing is often enough to suppress your return to fertility until at least six months, and much longer if your baby nurses frequently enough. Many women notice their cycles return after their babies space their feedings out to longer than five hours between nursing - or, usually when the baby begins to sleep through the night. On the other hand, some mothers find their period return as soon as their baby begins eating some solid foods and is thus no longer exclusively nursing.

There is a transitional period while your body will try to "kick back into gear" - you may notice increased discharge and some cramping. This may be a sign that you will get your period back within a few months' time.

In my personal experience, my period returned at 17 months postpartum with my first child. I was still breastfeeding but my son had just begun to sleep through the night at 15 months of age. I am currently 16 months postpartum with twins and have yet to have a period, although my twins DO sleep through the night. I suspect because I nurse so frequently with two of them that my period will not return for some time yet.

Good luck - great question!

With three of our children my cycle began with just a few months, but with one of them it didn't begin for 10 months. Yes, this is very normal if you are a vigorous, regular bf'er.

I breastfed for over a year. My period came back about 1 1/2 yrs after I had my son.

not till you stop breastfeeding

i got my after i stop breastfeeding child , about a month later
