How effective is gentian violet in treating nipple pain from breastfeeding? How do you get it off baby's skin?

I have seen 2 lactation consultants and a doctor. No one is sure if I have yeast in my nipples and no sign the baby has it in mouth either. They gave me an ointment but i didn't see much improvement after 3 days so they told me to try gentian violet. Has anyone tried it for nipple pain???? If so, how do you get the stuff off of the baby's skin???

Gentian violet is a coal tar derivative so I wouldn't use it. http://www.prematureoptimism.com/linkBlo...

However grapefruit seed extract is a natural yeast killer that has virtually no side effects. It also kills many harmful bacteria and viruses. It can be purchased at most health food, nutrition, and herb shops. http://www.drjaygordon.com/development/b...

I would certainly give the GSE a try, particularly if you are prone to vaginal yeast infections or have taken antibiotics.

Probiotics are also good for thrush and can be taken forever and have no side effects.

As for the nipple pain.... that's hard to say. Even if you have a "textbook perfect" latch it may not work for you and your baby. I have seen too many women told "its perfect" when really the latch is the problem. I would also make sure baby doesn't have a tongue tie.
