Why does my daughter throw up formula? I have to stop breastfeeding due to medical reasons.?

My 3 week old vomits everytime I feed her formula. I have a 23 month old so I know how things should go and about burping her and all that. She just can't hold the formula. I've been breast feeding since she was born but I don't have any other options, Please help.

If it's too personal to tell, that's fine, but I have to ask. What is the medical reason that makes you HAVE to stop breastfeeding?

Often times it's the doctor that says you have to stop, but in many many cases you truly don't have to.

To answer your question, your daughter throws up formula because it's too hard on her system. Her digestive system is still underdeveloped and formula is made from cow's milk, which contains large rubbery curds of casein protein, which human milk doesn't have. It's just too hard on her body to work to digest it.

Doctors are not the best source of information on infant nutrition. They get most of the knowledge they have from formula companies, not from medical school. I would see a board certified lactation consultant.

I agree with keevelish - don't just give up breastfeeding unless you absolutely have to - often doctors are not as supportive as they could be.
Your baby clearly is not happy with the formula, but I cannot recommend formula as I never used any.
You could re-establish breastfeeding if you had to stop cos of a course of medication for example - give it another go if you can it really is better for your baby!

I would get a second opinion on having to wean ASAP from an IBCLC, especially if she's not tolerating the formula well. Many doctors do not have training specifically regarding lactation.

Most meds are safe. When meds are not safe, there are sometimes safe alternative meds.

If it is a milk based formula she may be allergic to milk or be lactose intolerant. If it is a soybased formula it might be too strong for her. You need to consult the doctor and see if you should switch to another formula

If the doctor tells you you shouldn't breastfeed, then you shouldn't breastfeed. I agree with what you're doing.

I would probably switch to soy and see if that helps. The milk may not be agreeing with her.

She may need to go on Soy formula or the Gentle formula. I had two children that had trouble switching from breast feeding to formula. They both did really well on soy formula. I would talk to your doctor first, though.

Good luck!

what are your medical reasons? many people think that a particular medication isn't safe for breastfeeding when it really is.

IT MAY NOT AGREE WITH HER. YOU MAY NEED TO TRY A DIFFERENT BRAND OR SWITCH HER TO SOY. CALL YOUR DOCTOR AND EXPRESS YOUR CONCERNS. THEY WILL KNOW WHAT FORMULA TO TRY NEXT.

I would call the ped office and talk to a nurse to see what would be best. They might want you to bring her in just to check her.

Contact your doctor. Sounds like a reflux issue. This is fairly common.

The only thing that worked for us was Enfamil Gentlease formula, once we put her on that one it was smooth sailing.
Good luck ;)

i tried to supplement twice, after 4 weeks of breastfeeding and my daughter did the same. i was so cautious after that i havent been brave enough to try her on another formula since. (still breastfeeding) But many of my friends reccomended trying Nestle Goodstart. Good luck to you.

My son did the same thing, when I first started giving him formula. What I did, was water down the formula. Like, instead of 2 scoops for 4 ouncesof water, I'd put 5 ounces of water. This helped him alot, and he still won't drink it any other way.

GOOD LUCK!!

keevelish gave you a great answer.
