How do I get my baby back to breastfeeding? |
I breastfeed my baby more then with formula.. for the last three days I fed her from the bottle. And now I am trying to get her back to breastfeeding.. she gets fussy and wont eat! will she eventually give up and try eating at the breast or do babies get so stubborn that you have to feed formula? Shes four months old.. and I am starting to run out dry! If you still have some milk coming out, it may take a few days, but she will eventually be satisfied with the amount she is getting, if she had been satisfied in the past. You didn't mention how old she is, but if she is still only a few days or a few weeks, it will take some persistance but you certainly can get her back to the breast and liking it more. I was sick when my fist daughter was born and did not breastfeed her for several days. She had some formula in the hospital, and when I took her home I was determined to get her to breastfeed. I fed her every 2 hours, whether it seemed she wanted it or not, until my breastmilk came in...then I let her pick her schedule again! Good thing I put her back on the breast, but she ended up with multiple food allergies...including milk and soy! She continued to breast feed for more than two years because of her allergies and because we both enjoyed the time!! Good Luck! If you offered only formula for three days and did not pump your milk then your milk has possibly begun to dry up. She could be fussy because nothing (or very little) is coming out of you. Continue doing the formula so that she is fed but every time she takes formula pump with a breast pump to help get your supply back up. Then transition her back to the breast. Also, talk to a lactation consultant if you have started to dry up, they can help you to re-lactate. My son did this a bit. He wasn't as fond of breast feeding after having a nice easy bottle. I breast fed when he was sleepy (they like falling asleep breastfeeding) and bottle fed him expressed milk when he was super hungry. Get a good pump to maintain your supply while she's on a nursing strike. She'll regain interest soon, but you can always call the lactation consultants at the hospital you delivered at if you need more help. Hi Jasmine....keep trying. Its just a case of nipple confusion & more effort. Feeding from a bottle is easy for them as compared to sucking from the breast...hence the resistance. If possible try to breastfeed exclusively for a few days hence she'll get the message that this is what is available only and there are no other options. Feed her when she is really hungry...she wont mind the effort and the switch then my son wouldn't eat anything except formula at 2mths old. and I couldn't get him to accept the breast. try giving her breastmilk in a bottle and if that doesn't work then its the formula she wants. My son's appetite outgrew what my breastmilk was offering so formula was the only thing I could do. bottles are easier for babies to drink out of... don't take as much work. So she probably got used to the bottle nipple more than the formula. You could pump yuour milk and put it into bottles, or you could find a bottle nipple she doesn't like...whatever you do, be patient, she has to relearn a skill! search breast bottle on the internet, its a latex bottle in the shape of a breast, |
