Is formula cereal necessary if I'm breastfeeding too? |
My little girl is 5 months old, and she is VERY fussy if I only feed her breastmilk. Its too difficult to pump, because my breasts do not pump much more than 1 oz everytime, 2 if im lucky. She seems to be content if I give her formula cereal AND breast milk, is this normal? Is she just at the age where breast milk is not enough to make her full? I'll nurse for a half hour combined with both sides and I can tell she's getting enough milk because I hear her drinking. She feeds 3-4 times a day when she's at daycare (4 oz each) for 10 hours, and she eats either once (4 oz breast milk) when she gets home or once (4 oz breast milk) in the early morning. You can start her on solids and give her breastmilk also. I did not use Rice, I used oatmeal because my daughter could not handle the rice cereal. I was told to start solids at 4.5 months only because of how much formula my daughter was eating. Check over with the doctor to see what they think since they know the size of your daughter. what's formula cereal? i've never heard of that! anyway, your baby is old enough to start solids now, so start! her tummy is getting bigger, and you're not producing enough milk to keep her satisfied. most babies start to eat solids around 4 months. mine started with a little cereal in his bottles around 3 months, and was eating pureed fruits and veggies by 5 months. he's been on all table foods since about 10 months. try a little applesauce and maybe skip the cereal! i'd thicken it sometimes with a bit of ground oatmeal (way cheaper than the cereals, and it didn't have the added iron that constipated hiim so horribly!) and he absolutely loved it! give it a shot! You never need to give a breastfed baby formula. You can make cereal with formula, breast milk, water, juice, etc. There is no "must" to it. You don't even need to feed her cereal if you don't want to. If she is still hungry you can just start her on fruits and veggies. Pureed vegetables are way more healthy than processed cereal. You can start her on cereal mixed with breast milk if you want. No need to give formula at all. She is old enough to start some solids as well. 4-5 months is usually the time where it is fine to start introducing baby cereal as a supplement to her breastmilk intake. Completely normal. she may not be gettin enough out of your breast if you can only pump one oz at a time...you may not be producing enough milk... yes she does need cereal now.. she should be getting 30+ oz of milk aday |
