Baby weight and breastfeeding

what is the least amount of exceptable weight for a baby to gain while breastfeeding? friends baby only gains 8-10oz. a month! is that ok? now, shes losing weight, doc says she may have an over active thyroid

My baby didn't gain enough on breastmilk and it turned out I wasn't producing anywhere near to the minimum amount. Have this checked out right away to be sure the mother is producing enough for the child, if not try to increase the mother's output and consider supplementing with formula.

Breastfed infants generally gain weight according to the following guidelines:

0鈥? months: 170 grams per week鈥?
4鈥? months: 113鈥?42 grams per week
6鈥?2 months: 57鈥?13 grams per week
鈥?It is acceptable for some babies to gain 113鈥?42 grams (4鈥? ounces) per week. This average is taken from the lowest weight, not the birth weight.
The average breastfed baby doubles birth weight in 5鈥? months. By one year, the typical breastfed baby will weigh about 2陆 times birth weight. At one year, breastfed babies tend to be leaner than bottle fed babies. By two years, differences in weight gain and growth between breastfed and formula-fed babies are no longer evident.
Breast milk is best for mom and baby when possible. Be supportive of your friend nursing can be trying.
You can't tell how much a baby is getting from pumping the baby can always get more flow than a pump. It is what they are born to do.

I would check to see if your baby is getting enough food. It sounds like she isn't. Perhaps if you can pump your milk to see how much she's drinking will help give the doctor an idea. You may need to supplement with formula if your breast milk supply isn't enough for her. Make sure that you are eating enough food and drinking enough water to keep up your supply.
I think that if she has an over active thyroid, she can outgrow it, so try not to worry yourself. You may also want to weigh her more often, so you can monitor her weight really closely.

Don't listen to the first post on your answers. My baby was born at 9.1 lbs and at 4 months is 18 lbs. Babies do not practially starve on breastmilk like she said. Your friend's baby is definitely not gaining enough weight. Babies shouldn't lose weight. Try to talk her into going to the doctor to talk about her baby's weight. She might have to give formula if the baby isn't gaining enough.

Breastfeds practically starve on the watery breastmilk. Switch her to formula.
