Breastfeeding at night..formula during day? Will this work? |
I have an 8 month old baby who has been exclusively breastfed. She doesn't take the bottle and has never had formula. I'm sending her to daycare soon, as I'm heading back to work. It worked for me when my daughter was only 4 months old. You do want to start before you go back to work so that you can allow your supply to change patterns. You also need to help your lo get used to formula before you go back. I had to give mine bottles with a combo of breast milk and formula to get her used to the formula. Eventually she would take formula alone. Her demand for your milk will determine how much you make. I would stop breastfeeding her during the day for about 2 weeks prior to taking her to daycare. You don't just want to stop it the day of day-care and have them call you because she hasn't drank all day. Some infants who are strictly breastfeed will not take formula and the transition can be very hard that is why you need to start on it before the big day. My sister did it, but she was able to pump which kept the breast milk flowing as it were. i do not know if it would have dried up had she not pumped. I hope it does work favorably. It Will Not Dry Up As Such. I've considered this as I, too, have extreme difficulty pumping. I have been struggling since I returned to work to pump enough for my son. Be sure to try and give your baby formula now, before returning to work. Many breastfed babies refuse the stuff because it tastes VILE. Also, you may want to splurge on the ready-to-feed formula. It tastes a MILLION times better. I made my son a bottle of the powder formula and he refused it and he takes the ready-to-feed with no problems. I tasted it and understood why! It tasted like what I imagine drinking gasoline is like. I suggest seeing if you can get a sample from your pediatrician so you don't have to line the pockets of the pharma companies by buying the powder. my mom said that me and my brothers where breastfed in the morning then in the evening.. her milk were just fine.. so maybe it would be to you too.. http://www.kellymom.com/bf/weaning/weani... You are not the only one who has struggled with this decision. I have an 8 month old healthy joyous little boy. I have been working full time since he was 10 weeks old. Since that time I have pumped during the day 2-3 times so that he could have milk for the following day. I recently weaned myself to no pumping and still bing able to to feed AM and PM and on the weekends. Now it is tough on Monday not to pump but I make it through. I also give him formula during the day when he is at daycare. I know that you will find out what works best for you. Take care! By 8 months this should probably work. Your supply is well established and you should be able to go 9-10 hours without nursing, and keep your supply up. |
