Curious about breastfeeding laws in other areas?

this is a re-post of a question from earlier this afternoon, i only received one answer, and now that it isn't dinner time, i thought i would see if i could get some more :) http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/answers...

sorry wrong link, its this one http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;... whoops!!

In the states, 41 states allow women to breastfeed in any public place, to ask them to stop would be considered discrimination. Since the 1990's breastfeeding laws have come a long way in the state... some states mandating that breastfeeding mothers be allowed time to pump or feed at work, exempting breastfeeding mothers from jury duty, and many states are well on their way to removing breastfeeding from public indecency laws.
Here's a link if you want to know more about the states laws: http://www.ncsl.org/programs/health/brea...

Well I am only in WA where I am pretty sure discrimination is illegal here too. My in-laws are south african and when they moved here they could not believe the way breastfeeding is 'hidden away'. I am breastfeeding my 3 month old and I cannot do it in a public place I just feel too self conscious and embarassed because I know that a lot of people think it is gross and am scared they might say something or look at me funny. Whenever my son got hungry when we were out I would drive home to feed him or would take a bottle of formula with me. I did try the public breastfeeding thing one time but I felt really awkward and my bub picked up on it and fussed.
I can't imagine how horrible it must feel to be kicked out of somewhere for feeding your baby. How immature and perverted are people to feel disgusted or uncomfortable about something so natural and neccessary.

There are a few US states that have fines but its normally less than $100.

I'm in Ontario, Canada and you *can* drag someone in front of the human rights tribunal over it but I'm really not sure what sorts of punishments they can dish out.

You can see the US laws here: http://www.llli.org/Law/LawMain.html

In Manitoba, Canada it is illegal to discriminate against a woman who is pregnant or circumstances related to pregnancy, such as breastfeeding.

I'm only across the border in SA, but that's the case here too (although i'm not sure of the amount the fine is)
