Is there any particular reason why my baby sometimes coughs and chokes during breastfeeding? |
she is only breastfed and she is already 3 months,1 week old and sometimes during nursing she starts choking and pulls off, and coughs, then goes back to the breast. Is this normal? I am so worried. What could be the cause? yea ive heard about overactive letdown, but sometimes it happens well after the letdown. She is getting too much milk at a time. SOmetimes the flow of your breastmilk slows or speeds up throughout your feeding time. Or sometimes the baby will take a breath and mis-coordinate the breath and the swallow and the milk will sort of go down the wrong pipe (like adults do sometimes - I know I've done it). The best way to stop the heavy flow of milk is to counter it with gravity. Just lay on your back while she nurses. She won't get as much and won't choke. I had the same problem and my doctor/midwife told me its because she is not breathing whilst she is feeding, just like we do, when you have a drink you dont breath through your nose, you hold your breath , but as we get older we learn to control it unconsciously, when she is feeding she is trying to breath then milk gets caught in her breathing tubes causing her to gag and gasp for air, don't worry, it is normal and she should get the hang of it soon My son used to do that during the let down. Do you feel a mild burning sensation when she does it. The "let down" for some women is very heavy and sometimes the baby pulls off because the milk comes too fast. If you think this might be the reason try pumping a little so you are not so full of milk before she starts to feed. Good luck. Yep, totally normal, just milk coming out too fast. You can let down more than once during a session. Here is a link to more breastfeeding info and moms who are currently breastfeeding: http://community.thebump.com/cs/ks/forum... I agree with most of your other answers. The milk is coming out to fast or too much. Don't worry, I am breastfeeding my 4 1/2 month old right and he does the same thing. You're doing good, keep it up. Your milk is spraying into her throat, or she simply has to much milk in her mouth. She'll be fine. Rashibe is a pig, dont you understand muslims just cant walk around and do and say whatever they want to!!!! milk comes out to fast Swine Flu your milk has whiskey in it. lay off the jameson |
