Is someone with Staph Infection (or just had one) dangerous around a 6 month old baby & a breastfeeding Mom.?

In 2 weeks, myself & my wife who is breastfeeding our 6 month old son are all going on vacation to Floridia with some friends; one friends currently has a abcess - staph infection. She is on antibiotics (started 4 days ago). Will my friend still be contagious? Is it safe for my wife and 6th month old son to go on the trip with someone who is being treated for a staph infection? What precautions should we take if we do go?
Please give a detailed answer.

There has been an outbreak of this here. The fluid that comes from the abscess is what is contagious. As long as they keep it covered and the fluid isn't seeping out of the cover. You are no more contagious with your friend, than you are going to the grocery store or anywhere for that matter. Washing your hands (ALOT)will keep from being exposed to it. My husband had it, I did not get it, and I am the one who dressed it every day for weeks. Don't let your fear come between a friend, just have good hygiene as you would any time. You can pick it up anywhere and it you would touch yourself right after being exposed before washing your hands, you would get it. WASH YOUR HANDS, WASH YOUR HANDS, WASH YOUR HANDS.Usually it should be ok if you take the precautions needed, first as long as the person has been on medication for 48 to 72 hours the chance of cross contamination is lowered alot. The biggest thing is the wound being covered more so if your friend holds the baby and everyone wash hands alot. If the wound is covered and hand washing is done as it should be the chances of the staph tranfering to anyone is very low. If you need more info look uo the kind of staph your friend has, there aqre many differant kinds and precautions might be differant from the differant kinds.
Personally I wouldn't put my child in such an environment even if people say that there is no chance of infection. I know that this isn't the detailed answer that you asked for, it's just my opinion. Sorry
i tried webmd. sorry i found nothing.
normally after 24 hours on an antibiotic, a person is not contagious. but with staph it could be different.
you could call a doctors office ( your friends doctors office is preferable because they will know history and other info.)
ask to talk to a nurse and ask them any questions you may have.
they MAY be able to help.
untill then i would take precautions, just in case.
good luck
I think with the antibiotic treatment and the fact that the person has a localized abcess it wouldn't be contagious anyway. It would be different if it were a respiratory infection. Staph is on everyone's body, by the way...even the baby's body. It's when it overproduces that it's a problem. Tell her to wash her hands frequently and Let her enjoy her vacation!
