How do I properly wean from breastfeeding? |
I am down to nursing my baby only once per day. Do I just stop altogether? Or do I go down to once every other day? She is fine with not nursing, so it's not an emotional attachment thing. My main concern is with letting my milk whittle down so that I do not get Mastitis, etc. I just finished weening my 13 month old. She was at once a day and I went to only nursing her when I felt full and starting to get uncomfortable. Once your child is down to once a day it is the right time to nurse when you need it and not when she wants it. You will find doing this that your milk will start to dry up. It took two weeks and I am dried up with no problems. Source(s): Nursing mother of two children I would do a week of once a day, then a week of once every other day- that should be enough to keep from engorgement or mastitis. just stop. our daughter was relentless with her nursing. but the key is DO NOT give in once you have started the process as it is only more painful for you more than her. it iwll be hard the first 2 days and but by the 3rd, it is bounds easier, and by the end of a week, other than feeling engorged and wanting to cry, you will feel a lot better. as far as let down, i think because you are down to one nursing, it should be easier. things that i found helped: lots of sage (it helps dry up your milk supply), i turned it into tea with lemon and honey and lots of cabbage compresses replaced often. the cabbage is rumored to have anti-mastitis properties good luck Is she already one and now on cow's milk or is under one and now on formula? If she is already one then I would just have her nurse just a little bit (like before her bedtime) and each day just make it less and less so that your milk supply dwindles down. If she is now on a bottle I would do the same thing.... nurse just a little then giver her a bottle. Each day let her nurse less and less. Good luck. Whatever the reason you need to stop nursing should have more to do with how you wean than what a complete stranger thinks. At this age, your child's body is still designed to need breastmilk to develop properly. If you're just weaning her because you think other people expect you to, or don't understand how much she needs you, you should probably research nursing and infant development a little bit. I've linked to an article to get you started, but there's a lot of information about breastmilk and the role it plays in development out there. You could try the La Leche League or the American Academy of Pediatrics websites. While American medical establishments are fighting to convince the average mother to even nurse for a year, it's widely agreed that children should nurse for at least the first 2 1/2 years. Outside of the US, weaning so early without a very good reason is unthinkable. http://www.associatedcontent.com/article... |
