Would drinking whilst breastfeeding and drinking whilst pregnant have the same possible harmful effect on your |
baby? Or is one worse than the other? Either way your baby is still developing, isn't it? (I am talking about 1-2 standard glasses of wine) What did you or women you know do? _A_ glass of wine has never been shown to have a harmful effect either way. "The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists recently conducted a large study including 400,000 American women, all of whom had consumed alcohol during pregnancy. Not a single case of fetal alcohol syndrome occurred and no adverse effects on children were found when consumption was under 8.5 drinks per week. 3 A recent review of research studies found that fetal alcohol syndrome only occurs among alcoholics. The evidence is clear that there is no apparent risk to a child when the pregnant woman consumes no more than one drink per day." http://www2.potsdam.edu/hansondj/fetalal... "Abstaining for foetal health: The fiction that even light drinking is dangerous There is a strong ideological and political movement in the USA to convince pregnant women not to drink any alcohol. An examination of the research literature on the results of drinking during pregnancy does not provide any evidence that light drinking is harmful to the foetus." http://www.blackwell-synergy.com/doi/abs... "...there is even new research that shows that moderate drinking during pregnancy may actually help the development of the child after birth." http://dovercanyon.typepad.com/women_win... And, from a fairly reliable ("evidence-based," which is more than many can say) breastfeeding info site: "Current research says that occasional use of alcohol (1-2 drinks) is not harmful to the nursing baby. The American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Drugs classifies alcohol (ethanol) as a 鈥淢aternal Medication Usually Compatible With Breastfeeding.鈥? Many experts recommend against drinking more than 1-2 drinks per week. It is recommended that nursing moms avoid breastfeeding during and for 2-3 hours after drinking (Hale 2002). There is no need to pump & dump milk after drinking alcohol, other than for mom's comfort -- pumping & dumping does not speed the elimination of alcohol from the milk. Alcohol does not increase milk production, and has been shown to inhibit let-down and decrease milk production (see below). If you're away from your baby, try to pump as often as baby usually nurses (this is to maintain milk supply, not because of the alcohol). At the very least, pump or hand express whenever you feel uncomfortably full - this will help you to avoid plugged ducts and mastitis. In general, if you are sober enough to drive, you are sober enough to breastfeed." http://www.kellymom.com/health/lifestyle... Re. "What did you or women you know do?" Women I know did their own research, did their own thinking, and relaxed and drank very lightly. i don't think wine is going to harm a baby, i wouldn't go over 1 small glass though. Stay away from booze though Well, neither is good for baby, BUT I think that drinking while breastfeeding would be LESS harmful. Not that I am condoning this in any way. What I have read is that you can have 1 glass of wine or beer and you must wait 2 hours to feed after that. beyond that one glass, you should pump and dump your milk. I'm breastfeeding my daughter now, and I occassionally have a glass of wine. I was told by a lactation consultant that if you can drive, you can breastfeed. I would not drink while pregnant though. I just wouldn't risk it, regardless of what people say. Mom to a 6 month old Drinking while breastfeeding is just the same as drinking while pregnant. 1-2 glasses of wine should not be harmful. But there is still a risk. I suggest you ask you doctor. :) I would say that drinking at either time is totally irresponsible. In answer to your question, I'd have to say it would be worse for the baby to get alcohol through breast milk because the mothers liver wouldn't have filtered out any of the alcohol. Many a mother has accidentally harmed their baby by taking a simple couch medicine without thinking about the baby taking it through their breast milk. Just don't chance your baby Dear, Pandora |
