Does it sound like cervical cancer?

My mom had cervical and uterine cancer. About 5 months ago I had a pap smear and it came back abnormal. I have to go for a second one in may. I am on mirena birth control as well. My periods normally last 3 days. This month my period was 5 days late and started with thick dark brown (no red) discharge and now its already been 2 weeks of red bleeding and I'm still bleeding - VERY heavy. I also have been having horrible cramping in my lower pelvic area, and for the past 3 months I have had a mucousy discharge tinged with blood. Sound like cervical cancer or something else?

Depending on the level of dysplasia. If your pap smear showed abnormal cells it will also give a level or grade. Level (grade) 0 is normal 1 is slight 2 is mild etc on up to 5. 5 is definite malignancy. Pap smear restlts of 3 or more usually warrant a colposcopy immediately. Follow up PAP smears are perfectly normal if the grade is less than 3. In this instance with the changes in your cycle I wouldnt worry too much about cervical cancer right now, but, I would definitely call your GYN & speak to the nurse & update them on your changes. They may want to do a pelvic ultrasound (painless) or give you an internal exam either way. Hope things are okay.good luck.

It can be any number of things. Any cycle which lasts for more then 10 days is reason for concern. For one you are at risk for anemia and the reason for the occurrence needs to be diagnosed and treated. Please call your GYN first thing in the morning, this cannot wait until May.

It doesn't have to be cervical cancer. It could be endometriosis. The only way to tell is to have follow-up. If you had an abnormal pap smear your doctor should have scheduled you for a colposcopy next. This will sample the cells to test for cancer.
