Cervical cancer jab ?

Why is there not a jab for men?

I wasn't asking why don't men get the cervical cancer jab, I meant why isn't there one for men, like a testicular cancer jab?

Thats a good question. I asked the same one a while back and only got one answer. I was looking for the q, but cant find it now. They said something along the lines that they just havent tested it on men yet.

Its seems kinda dumb to me. I mean, men get and spread hpv, why only vaccinate the girls? And then only girls of a certain age? I understand that once you have had sex you have probably already been exposed, but...

Cervical cancer is also not the only cancer that is HPV positive. I dont remember everything the person said, but apparently there are a lot of different cancers that can be hpv positive if you have hpv.

This is one area where I join some of the conspiracy theorists. Gaurdasil is a great vaccine, and a great idea, and a great preventative method not only for the virus but for cancer as well. But WHY do we only give it to preteen girls???????????

The reason the jab has not been applied to men at the moment is that the main effect of HPV is to play a part in cervical cancer. It is thought that if women do not contract HPV then cases of cervical cancer will be dramatically reduced.

However, HPV has been linked to cases of anal cancer and there is some speculation as to whether the jab should be given to men, so loooks like just a matter of time.

No viruses or bacteria have been implicated in testicular cancer so no vaccine has been made.

Well, men can get the cervical cancer jab, but it's not cost effective to do so, as they don't have a cervix.

As for testicular cancer.. well. Testicular cancer is quite rare, and it's not caused by a virus. Cervical cancer is in a special place, because essentially all cases of it are caused by a specific virus - HPV. Because of this, we can develop a vaccine against that specific virus. No virus, no cancer.

There's not a lot of other major cancers that are caused by viruses. Epstein-Barr virus has been implicated in certain B-Cell lymphomas, JC virus is implicated in some cancers, and the only real 'big' one besides HPV is Hep B and Hep C and liver cancer - and we have vaccines against B now. A Hep C vaccine is in the works, but given the stink people throw up about vaccines and the inordinate amount of money it takes to make them, don't expect it to be done within five years.

Essentially there is no male equivalent of cervical cancer (a specific cancer caused by a specific virus). Male-specific cancers like testicular and prostate are not especially involved with viruses, and more involved in age and genetic factors.

There is suggestion that the same vaccine should also be given to boys of the same age, but so far clinical trials and the approval has just been given for use on girls (it maybe something that is introduced in the near future)

Edit
Yes just echoing what Midnight said; Gardasil is NOT a vaccine against Cervical Cancer per se, there is no vaccine against any cancer.. it is a Vaccine against the HPV (the type that has a direct link between causing cervical cancer) Both males AND females can have this virus. It would make more sense to give this vaccine to both girls and boys to prevent spreading.

edit
Because testicular cancer isn't caused by a virus. There would be no way to vaccinate against it.

The HPV virus is one of the few viruses linked in a causal way with cancer development. ( another is a type of leukaemia.) There is no evidence that testicular cancer has a viral etiology, hence no vaccine is possible. It is not some personal vendetta aimed at you because you are male!

Becuase men dont have cervixes! A man can see what his penis looks like and check for abnormalities, but i sure as hell cant see inside my cervix, no matter how hard id try...!

hmmmm tough question
actually that's a really good question but I'm sure they will bring one out for men soon though

Why do you know one with a cervix?

We don't have a cervix
