Catholic school bans cervical cancer jab on grounds of possible side effects. Who honestly believes this?!?

http://newsvote.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/m...

Roman Catholic School says that school is not the right place to have cervical cancer jab and claims there are possible side effects. This is very cunning and dangerous, because they make no mention of what their real moral/religious concern is - the notion that girls will be more promiscuous if they have the jab, because of the belief that those who have more sexual partners are more likely to get HPV which causes a majority of cervical cancers.

The school is obviously savvy enough to realise that basing their argument on promiscuity will just make them look religious Neanderthals, so instead they try and stoke the fire of fear by claiming there are side effects to be concerned by. After the farce of the MMR vaccine you would think that anyone trying to falsely whip up concerns about a vaccine which is aimed at protecting our children's lives, would be severely dealt with, but no they just get a finger waved at them and shake of the head. We cannot allow religious schools to limit their pupils medical safety and push it under the carpet like this.

it makes me furious too.
i have the pre cancerous cells of the cervix, and i did not have sex at a early age, i have not had lots of sexual partners, but i have it, i wish i could of been vaccinated.
how many people do you know think, if i have sex it may higher my risk of cervical cancer...none, these religous nuts need to get there heads out there bibles and listen.
it should be up to the parents and the girl whether or not they have it done, not the church.

ive been thinking shouldn't the catholic
even if it was likely to make girls more likely to have sex, i bet most parents would rather risk that than risk there child be seriously ill, lose there fertility, and die of cancer.

edit...
shouldn't the catholic school have a little 'faith' {pun intended} in it's students not to have sex.
but then again theres nothing stopping the faithful catholic teenage girls who abstain from sex to get it when they have sex when they are married is there?

They tried to test this vaccine in my area of the world when it first was released. The idea that the girls around here were good subjects had nothing to do with anything but their economic status. Poor, maybe, stupid, NO.

Dude, the vaccine has only been around for a short time, and serious side effects are already being reported. The school is right, and it has nothing to do with promiscuity OR religion.

Actually, I've heard there really might be long term side effects. There are some feminists up in arms about it because the company is using a false sense of pro-woman empowerment to sell young people and their parents on getting the shot, even though a questionable amount of research was done on the long-term effects of the vaccination.

I agree with the school. They have to limit liability. Plus, HPV isn't like polio, it can't become a epidemic, so there's no desperate need to inoculate everybody. If the parents want the child to get the injection then they can, but the onus shouldn't be put onto schools. The risk may be small, but there is still a risk.

If I had a daughter in catholic school i would be kicking up a fuss about not allowing the jab. I feel it is a parents right to do what they feel best for their child and not let religious or social opinion sway them from what they believe is right for their child.

I am all for the jab and want to have both my daughters vaccinated. However, my friend refuses to have her daughter done because she says there isn't enough proof that it is safe. And her husband works in the medical field, as a scientist.

it sounds awful, it is a backward thinking, they should be promoting it. they do not seem to care for these girls lives, rather just for their own interests, which at this time are purely laughable.

If you would like more answers, consider asking around this site as well...

i go to a catholic school and our chicks got the vaccination and there were no side effects, lol, that's pretty awesome though damn romans so nieve

I am Catholic, but my children attend public school. I have heard of this and I don't think it is based on anything except skepticism. When I first learned that my two youngest daughters would need this vaccine in order to enter middle school, I was leary. I did my research and declined the vaccine, not based on religious beliefs, but because of the lack of supporting data and evidence that this vaccine was safe. I, as a parent want what is best for my girls and once there is more data and studies supporting the claims of this being safe, I'll be the first in line to have this done. In the mean time, I'll just keep open communication with my daughters, not allow them to run the streets or be unsupervised and trust that I have given them all of the right tools and ideas to just say no. It is boldly documented that this vaccine is safe, but some of the unsafe attributes of this vaccine are in small print, why not make the side effects just as clear as the benefits?

Actually, the vaccine has caused many side effects including death in some girls.

And I agree a Catholic School is not the right place. Giving it to young girls assumes, and even endorses, sexual promiscuity. The Church teaches and has always taught, that sex outside of marriage is a sin. People say "well they'll do it anyway" and that may be true for some but this does not mean the Church should change it's teaching on sex. Human beings will always sin, but that Church cannot cave into popular demands and opinions to appease the current generation. Sin cannot be jusitified. St. Paul said we should not do an evil to bring about good. In other words approving of a lesser sin in order to prevent a greater one is not justified.

The birth control pill also has side effects and caused deaths years ago, as well as birth defects. The Church has never approved of contraception, no matter how popular it is.

I would never allow my daughter to get that vaccine. It is not requried here and should not be required. Vaccines that are required are for contagious diseases that are airborne, or can be transferred through touching or saliva. The HPV vaccine assumes girls and boys will be sleeping around. A Catholic school cannot and should not assume such a thing.

Just because most adults assume kids will do drugs and drink alocohol...should they provide a safe place at the school for kids to do that? No of course not. People have to be responsible for the actions and stop looking to the government to make it safe for them to behave irresponsibly. Teach your kids that sex outside is not only a sin but unsafe.
