Abnormal Pap? Could this be Cervical Cancer?

Hi. Im 23. My nurse just called me (which i just knew what it was) because a few years ago I had an abnormal pap smear in which the nurse had called me and said I needed a colposcopy. I had one done and there were no abnormal cells anymore. Well, I had 2 pap smears done after that and all normal so i felt wonderful! Then on March 2nd, 2009 I went for my pap smear and earlier today, the nurse called and said your pap was abnormal and you need a colposcopy. Now this is really starting to freak me out. Now im think i should get off the pill and ttc just incase i have cervical cancer! I have only been on the pill for a little over a week now....

Please help I am getting so depressed. I hope my story wasnt hard to follow.

FYI: I have been ttc for about 2 yrs now and nothing! :(

Basically, do you think i should stop taking the pill to ttc because of 2 abnormal paps?
Also, can abnormal paps be the cause of my inability to get pregnant?

Thank you so much!

I was told the same thing about 3 months ago. I went to a second opinion because the first GYN I went to had a clerk call me with the news as I was driving 'alone' to pick up my son at school.

Not to mention she wanted me to have the colposcopy the next day and to bring in $265.00. I was so upset...about everything!

The second Doctor calmed my concerns when he explained to me that: in 98% of women the repeat pap a year later comes back negative.

And new studies have shown that woman who had the colposcopy did not do any better or worse that the women that just waited.

He also explained that even if it would be vaginal cancer that it takes about 10 years to be anywhere dangerous. You see, I do not have a cervix. It was removed after complications of my baby boy 16 years ago.

I hope I helped with my experience. Second opinion is always good.

Mystified

The pill decreases your chance of cervical cancer believe it or not just listen to your doctor and do what they say. Good luck.

No, first of all, try and calm down. I know that's easy for me to say, as I'm not in your situation. But, Wait. Don't get off the pill on your own. You've only been on the pill a week, so that's not long enough to make a difference anyway. Talk to your ob/gyn. Call her and speak with her directly about your concerns.

And, an abnormal pap smear could be for other reasons other than cervical cancer. My step-daughter just went through the same thing, and she's 20. She had HPV, which could lead to cervical cancer.

Your smear could have been mis-read in the lab, or it could have been a mix up with someone else's test. Just try not to panic, and call and speak directly with your ob/gyn about your concerns, and make sure you do what they tell you to do. Remember, they are there to help you.

Good luck!

Hi, I'm sorry to hear that you need a colposcopy. I had an abnormal smear 2 years ago but then got pregnant 2 months later so that meant that my repeat smear had to be delayed until I had my post natal check up. Thankfully, both of my repeats have come back as normal and I don't have to go for another year. From my own experience, having an abnormal smear doesn't affect your ability to conceive.

I honestly don't think that you have cervical cancer. Cervical cancer can take 15 years to develop so as long as they remove the abnormal cells that MAY become cancerous 15 years down the line you'll be fine.

If you're not happy, please go and see your GP who will be able to explain everything or call the nurse back and ask her to explain.

Please don't worry. Take care
