It's (most usually) caused by an infection by HPV, the virus that causes genital warts. Different serotypes cause cervical cancer than the ones that cause the verrucous warts on the external genitalia, however, many people infected with the cancer causing serotypes (16 and 18) have no external signs of infection. The virus is spread through contact, which is usually sexual. Also, a good thing to know is that when men are screened for STDs, they usually don't screen for HPV - so it's not always safe to assume a 'clean bill of health' is actually clean - i think i heard that over 50% of sexually active adults are carriers of HPV. Don't know all the exact stats, but i do know that death from cervical cancer is not very common these days, because aggressive screening such as PAP smears catches it early.
