Cervical cancer scare or not?

I'm 21 years old and a month ago I got an abnormal pap and just got into a dr who just talked to me about a procedure (colposcopy) she wants to do but that's not until the 26th of jan. I'm slightly freaked out here cause the day before I got the call bout my abnormal results my aunt started chemo for uterine cancer. Not to mention that her oncologist said the women in our family have a genetic mutation and all women in our family should have their ovaries removed as soon as they are done having children. I'm just really annoyed with the fact that I have to wait so long to get any results with as rampant as this is in my family. I know it may be nothing and that's what everyone keeps tellin me but it's hard not to be freaked. Do I have reason to worry or am I just being irrational? And is it common for doctors to wait SO long to do a test that can tell so much? I'm just really confused about this whole thing.

im also 21 and had an abnormal pap smear. i also had a colopscopy done 2 weeks ago and i have some form of low risk dysplasia from the HPV virus. If i were you i really wouldn't worry about it and discuss it with your doctor.

Frankly, I would use this time to seek another opinion. One bad Pap can be also a mistake. With your history you should also get the new vaccine. I think it is odd she is wanting to do the colposcopy bu putting it off so far into the future - just what was the number of the test they got when they did the Pap? Try to see another doctor before you let her do this to you.
There is reason to be concerned, but don't over stress about it. I also encourage you to get a second opinion. I am quite suprised that they are going for a colposcopy after just one abnormal pap. I was about 32 when I got my first "abnormal" pap. My doctor waited 3 months, did another and it was normal, then again in 3, then 6 and on to one year. It may be that she's cautious since you DO have a family history, but is delaying because she doesn't feel the abnormal results are threatening. I suggest that you call your doctor's nurse soon and express your concerns and have a good chat. If you don't have a warm fuzzy after your talk I would call another doctor and get in as soon as you can. That's my two cents. Good luck.
It's a really scary thing and feeling freaked is pretty normal. <hug> I'm 48 and got an abnormal pap 6 years ago. The doc said, "Cervical cancer". Saw a second doc who said, "Stop taking your hormone replacement." Talked to the first doc, stopped taking hormone replacement, and have had normal paps since. At 21, and with your family history, your mileage *will* vary, but if it's possible, *DO* get a second opinion. 2nd doc may see something the first missed, or the 2nd doc *might* be able to hurry things up. I have also had an abnormal pap. In fact for two years I had an abnormal pap. I did have the colpo. I was told that I had mild dysplasia. It went away on it's own. Last year I had a normal pap. I wonder if you can worry about this til the end of next month? Maybe you should tell your Dr. that you need an earlier appt. She can squeeze you in somewhere. Good luck!
Your doc is probably just being cautious. The abnormal pap could be from any number of things. If she were really worried she would have scheduled your procedure earlier. However, I would have it done. If you don't, and you just do another pap with another doctor, it will delay the inevitable of having the colposcopy done anyway, because the part of you that is worried will worry even more if you never have it done. You sound like you definitely trust your doctor.... trust that she wouldn't let it go that long if it was a life or death situation.

don't freak out, chances are it is nothing. I have cervical cancer that it in remission. It is totally curable if found right away. Have you thought about the shots to prevent cervical cancer.
