Cervical cancer and pregnancy?

i am 39 weeks pregnant and still not dilating or 'ripening'. my pap was abnormal, they found a lesion on my cervix and wont touch it until after i deliver when they are going to repeat the pap. they say since cancer runs in my family, i have a good chance of having cervical cancer. but we wont know anything until after i deliver. what are the chances that my lesion is causing me to not dilate? and what do i have to look forward to after delivery if it is cancerous? SERIOUS REPLIES ONLY PLEASE!!!!!!!

I can help. I am a med student and I just went through the same thing. I too had an abnormal pap a few months ago. I had A-Typical cells and a lesion. I too have cancer in my family. They performed a biopsy and removed the lesion. It turned out to be nothing and now I am fine. I can not believe that your doctor is not discussing this with you. Mine was more than happy to answer any Q's. As for you not dialating yet, I didnt start to dialate until 2 days before my due date so I think thats normal.

I'm really sorry, I don't know much about this The Dr. should be able to tell you if the lesion is keeping you from dilating. I'm really surprised they haven't induced labor or delivered your baby via c-section at this point so they can start figuring out how to take care of you, your baby should be ready to be born and the sooner you can start treatment if you do have cancer the better. These are questions you should ask your doctor. You can get answers about that here, but these are serious issues that require answers from a trusted physician.
The lesion on your cervis is most likely not causing you to NOT dilate. pregnancies can go to 42 weeks safely, so maybe you've got one that wants to stay inside.

IF this lesion IS cancerous, they may either perform surgery to remove the tissue, if it appears to be an easily removed lump in one mass. Or you may be looking forward to chemotherapy to "kill" the cancerous cells in your body. PLEASE talk to your doctor about what this entails. It may not be as serious as that.

IF you do need chemo, you will need a strong support group, or people who can help you care for your child. Chemo can cause bouts of exhaustion, illness, weakness and nausea, so you may have times that you don't have the energy or ability to watch your baby. Just build a strong network to help you through it.

cancer does NOT equal death. Surgery can sometimes be all it takes, but LISTEN to everything your doctor has to say, and ASK HIM/HER every question in the book. You have a right to know ALL the answers here, so question question question.

My girlfriend had the exact same thing. She went ahead and delivered vaginally and then had a leep to examine the pre cancerous cells on her cervix. Then had another baby 3 yrs later.
You will be fine and should dilate just like normal. Dont worry about this thing being cancerous. Many many women have the same problem and your going to do fine.
