Cervical cancer.. questions? |
Hello.. My best friend recently had an abnormal pap.. She's 34 and had HPV a few years ago and thought it had gone away.. She has had her paps on time every year.. I was wondering.. if this is cervical cancer, are the odds in her favor that this is in its early stages since her paps have been taken every year on time, and always normal? I'm extremely worried.. They're doing the biopsy in about a month.. Any responses would be greatly appreciated I had an abnormal pap about 15 years ago. I was in my mid-20s. I went in for a biopsy (sorry to say - it hurt like hell!). It turned out to be nothing. Not even pre-cancerous cells! Doctors are so leary of missing a diagnosis and having subsequent malpractice suits, they tend to err on the side of caution and rule out cancer with a biopsy. If she's had regular annual paps and this is the first abnormal one, odds are it's: 1.) Nothing - just an anomaly or misread pap (the technicians are only human and they read thousands) 2.) Pre-cancerous cells - easily treated 3.) Very early cancer - also treatable I can understand your (and her) worrying and you won't rest easy until the biopsy results are in. But I hope you will rest a bit easier knowing that it's less likely to be serious. If this is her first abnormal pap and she's has them regularly then it is probably not cancer. It might be a precancerous condition but that is treatable. It also might just be some kind of infection. Don't get scared, even if it is cancer you've caught it early enough to be treatable. Good luck. They caught it early... I know a lot of women that have had this and many have it frozen or burned off with no return. I had 2 abnormal paps in a row and had to have a biopsy done. It was cancer but the ok cancer that doesn't spread. I ended up having to have a hysterectomy a few yrs later due to endometriosis and they took my cervic and one ovary as well. Maybe your friend can call her doctor's office and ask if they can see her sooner if she wants. I have had 2 aunts and a friend that have had abnormal paps and all their biopsies showed nothing wrong. Sometimes paps are wrong negatives. Like a wrong pregnancy test-like a negative positive or a positive negative. Is there family history of cancers on the women's sides? Otherwise, worrying will just put stress on your shoulders. Keep your fingers crossed and pray for her. Good luck! Abnormal paps are quite common. I have had abnormal cells twice. Once I had them lasered off, the second time was LEEP. Both times I had to go to the Cancer Clinic. I was told right away they were not Cancer, but if left untreated it could turn into Cancer. If abnormal cells are caught early- as in your friends case, it is easily treated. She will be fine! I too had abnormal paps for quite a few years, I had many biopsies, but the best thing I had done was a little surgery called a cone, there is a longer name for this but I cannot think of it right now. When this surgery is done the doctor removes the bad cells, I have had so far good paps since then. Tell your friend to ask about this procedure. |
