What exactly is Cervical cancer?

I keep hearing these commercials and ads on the tv and wonder what it's about. They say it only effects woman. Does anyone know exactly what it is and how you get it? thanks.

it's cancer, but it most commonly comes from a STD called HPV ( genital warts ) the reason you are seeing so many comericals is that they have just discovered a vaciene the can prevent Cancer from occuring after HPV. huge medical break through the scary part is there are more then 4 types of HPV only 2 cause cancer the other 2 cause warts. if you get the warts you wont get the cancer but in either case its good to get it checked out. if you have had sex with more than one partner you are likely to have been exposed to HPV it is the most common but also the most anoying. good luck i hope that helps

It's cancer of your cervix. Some strands of HPV (a sexually transmitted disease) cause cervical cancer. We're lucky they just came out with and HPV vaccine for women that prevents the 4 strands of HPV that cause cervical cancer. Ask your OB/GYN about it, and read more info. here:

The cervix is the neck, or bottom part of the womb, the part closest to the outside. Cancer cells can start growing here, and can eventually spread to other parts of your body too. Pap smears check for cervical cancer. Women should have a pap smear done once a year, especially important if she is sexually active. They say genital warts (human papilloma virus) can cause cervical cancer, but it can just appear for no obvious reason too. Women just need to get checked.
It is cancer of the cervix which only occurs in women because men do not have cervixes. It is strongly linked to the Human papilloma virus which is a sexually transmitted illness.
Which doesn't eliminate you if you haven't had an hpv.
The cervix is part of the woman's sexual anatomy in case you need to know.
It's just what it says - malignant growths of cervical tissue. The cervix is part of the female reproductive system, so it can only affect women, just a prostate cancer can only affect men.

Some types of cervical cancer can be caused by a small number of the various types of human papilloma virus (HPV). But not all types of the HPV virus are carcinogenic, and even at that, not all women who become infected with those particular types of HPV will develop cervical cancer.

Yes, there is a newly approved vaccine against these particular types of HPV, but it can't help you if you're already infected with one of them. That's the reason that it's targeted for pre-teen and teenaged girls - the younger it's given, the greater the chance that the girl is not yet sexually active and therefore has not yet been exposed.
