If you get the cervical cancer vaccine, then does that mean you no longer need a pap smear? |
I would rather get the vaccine then keep having to go back to the gynecologist every year. For starters, the cerival cancer vaccines only decreases your chance of having cervical cancer (it does not eliminate it). It is also more harmful than good, because though it decreases your risk of cervical cancer, it INCREASES your chances of having other female cancers. You should also have a yearly gyno check just to make sure everything is still normal or if you have the slightest female problems (such as abdominal pain, painful intercourse, dark or smelly discharge or even depression or weakness). These could be the early warning signs of something serious. I speak from experience....Don't skip your yearly Gyno exam. If you do, you might come to a bad surprise. You would still need to get pap smears. The HPV vaccine does not protect against all strains of HPV. There are MANY!! They protect against the ones that are most likely to cause cervical cancer. It also covers a few of the strains that cause genital warts. You still need pap smears to diagnose a variety of other vaginal infections and cancers of the vagina and surrounding areas. The cervical cancer vaccine is just for cervical cancer. There are many more reasons why we get pap smears. You still must get one yearly. There are alot more things than cervical cancer you can get in that area. |
