Can a woman die from cervical cancer? is it deadly?

Depend what stage it is caught at. Prognosis is pretty good when caught early. Cancer grows and spreads throughout the body in the later stages.
You can die from Cervical cancer in the later stages.
My mother in law did at age 52. She did not get pap smears done and it matestisized before they caught it. Cancer has many stages. When it becomes large enough in turmorous stages or mastestisizes it gets really stubborn sometimes.
Problem with cervical cancer is that by the time you get notable physical symptoms it's already very far advanced. When any cancer is advanced then it's much more likely to spread and ultimately to die of it. That's why we 've got screening.

The way I look at it - a smear's not very pleasant but I'm willing to bet a hell of an amount that the treatment for cervical cancer is 500% worse.

I've edited this post to reiterate that, if it is caught early, cervical cancer is very treatable. If it was always fatal (as a poster suggested below) then they would not waste money on offering the screening programme in the UK. As I stated above, the problem is that it is a "silent killer" - i.e. when the symptoms are notable as something being seriously wrong it is often far gone. BUT miracles happen every day, and someone has to be in the lucky group who survive advanced cancer.

My friend had HPV. She's had the abnormal cells removed and she's fine - just needs yearly check ups.

The problem with posting on a web site is that people who actually have no idea what they are talking about post as an authority. While this may be a case of the pot calling the kettle black, I believe in presenting the facts rather than scare tactics (such as you die if you've cervical cancer). The point is, you don't need to die.

I hope the question poser is asking this cause she doesn't much fancy having a smear (which is unpleasant but necessary) rather than he/she knows someone who has this cancer.

Either way - good luck.
The NHS is under huge amounts of financial strain. Any intervention implemented by them is thought to be of financial benefit - ie it costs more to treat the full blown cancer than catch it early and treat an individual so that they can go out and work and pay more taxes to fund the NHS. It's basic economics.
Yes you can die from cervical cancer. My 18 yr old daughter had it she had to have 2 surgeries before the Dr got it all. She has been cancer free for 1 yr now. You have to find it in the early stages. You do not feel pain or anything when you have it that is the reason it is so deadly. It is in 4 stages the earlier you find out you have it the better your chances are.
Cervical cancer is almost always fatal. Reason? Rarely is it caught in time, even when one undergoes routine yearly exams. Cervical cancer kills more women each year than many other cancers combined. The cheif cause of cervical cancer? HPV, Human Papoloma Virus. In the US there is now a vaccine for girls who are not yet sexually active to help prevent certain HPV infections. hopefully as the vaccine gains popularity the deaths from cervical cancer will diminish in future years.
Some of the feedback people are giving you here is wrong. I've had cervical cancer before, so I know quite a lot about it. In most cases, it is highly treatable. As long as a woman gets yearly paps, she will probably survive cervical cancer should she be diagnosed. Cervical cancer is typically a slowly growing type of cancer. If left untreated, it actually can spread and become fatal.
