So I'm getting the cervical cancer vaccine...? |
If i were to get the cervical cancer vaccine...is it true i can;t have sex one month before the vaccine? I did a little search. I didn't find out about abstinence before receiving the vaccine, however, I did find out that the reason the vaccine is recommended for girls 11-12 is twofold. (1) They probably haven't already been exposed to the viruses, and (2), A younger person will build up a greater level of antibodies than an older one. So it seems that the older you are and the more sexually active you have been, you will gain a lesser level of protection. They do not yet know what level of antibodies is enough, that's why they do three shots, to get the level up as high as possible. They also do not yet know whether booster shots will be needed. Do not let this uncertainty about antibody levels stop you from getting the shot. The three shots are simply an abundance of caution, to make sure you have enough to protect you as much as possible. The shots have, so far, been proven of value in sexually active women under the age of 26 who have already been exposed to the viruses. If it is true that you must forgo sex for a month (or more), isn't it well worth it to ensure a measure of safety from cervical cancer? Source(s): www.mayoclinic.com/health/cerv... I don't know but if it is maybe that is the window to make sure you don't already have hpv as the vaccine might cause problems in someone who does. I've heard that you won't get the vaccine if you have had sex full stop. This is because its to stop you getting HPV, it would make sense that you can't have sex 1 month before because they need to make sure that you don't already have the virus before you get a vaccination for it. However, this mainly applies if you have more that one long-term sexual partner and have both been screen previously. You shoudl find out what your doctor advises you personally to do about this. I'm not sure about that...but I will tell you it is three injections, not yet covered by insurance...runs over $500. Most young ladies are getting this BEFORE sexual relations. You might want to ask your doctor before you risk getting this shot and it end up being useless. I agree with Natalie |
