Can you have normal pap and still have cervical cancer? Doc saw something on cervix early signs of cervical c |
Doctor saw something on my cervix that she said might be early signs of cervical cancer. Pap smear was normal. Could be HPV. They may want to do a colposcopy. it's possible.... pap smears arent 100% but they are very reliable. She could see scarring from hpv or chlamidia or something else, dont panic in either case you are very treatable. I think you need to have an abnormal pap smear,to say that you have cervical cancer. It also depends on when you had the pap smear. If you had the pap smear more than six months ago (which was normal),and the physical examination was recent,it could be a possibility.Women need to have regular pap smears.how often, depends on the pap smear results itself. The pap test is just a screening test. This means that it will not catch every case of cancer or pre-cancer of the cervix. In fact, it has a false negative rate of 4-10%, meaning that 4-10% of cases of pre-cancer or worse are missed by the pap. If your doctor is worried about spots he/she saw on your cervix, they need to take biopsies while doing colposcopy (it's like using a magnifying tool to look at your cervix very closely). There are many things that could be going on that are NOT cancer (infection, etc), however they need to make SURE this is not cancer/pre-cancer, despite the negative pap. If there are abnormal cells in the biopsy, don't worry. There are a lot of things they can do to treat pre-cancer to prevent it from becoming cancer! Good luck! By the way, HPV is a sexually transmitted disease, but it is not tested with the methods they use on a normal basis (those just test for gonorrhea and chlamydia). They can do a test for HPV from your pap if your doctor requests it. I've had irregular paps several times before. I was told it was because of HPV. I had spots on my cervix and had several biopsies and ended up getting my cervix frozen. It wasn't that bad, just cramping. I went a few months ago to have another pap and the spots were almost gone. So, hopefully it will work. If not, I'll have a partial hysterectomy. Good luck honey, and stick with all your appointments. Cervical cancer doesn't equal death (if you take care of it now). |
