Is there a possibility that I can get cervical cancer?

My mom died when I was 10, she died of cervical cancer. You see I have sometimes cryed and wonder if I could get it, I mean nothing is impossible you know. I don't open this subject up to my dad because he's a jerk for the most part, and I know its very wrong for letting feel this way. If I convince him to see my school nurse and talk to him, I know he will just get mad and say I'm a drama queen and I'm gonna waste his money, or the "Your fine, nothings wrong with you" method. Me and my dad rarely get along. To be honest I dont feel any affection from him and I feel like he's more of a stranger to me.

Please help :( what are the possiblities I could get it? the only thing I know is that after 3 years after having your first time having sex is to get a pap smear.

I agree with the other answerers for the most part.

The death rate from cervical cancer has dropped precipitously since the Pap test was introduced:

I'm sorry your mother had to become a statistic.

I couldn't find any convincing evidence that there is a genetic component to cervical cancer. Most cases are caused by the HPV virus, and many women who have HPV infections *don't* go on to get cervical cancer. Regular Pap tests will detect cellular abnormalities before they get serious. Because it usually takes years for the infection to progress to cancer, the disease is more common in older women. Only 8.1 out of every 100,000 women in the US get cervical cancer:

Along with starting to have sex at an early age and having many different partners (these both just increase your exposure to the virus), smoking is a risk factor. A new vaccine will decrease your chances but not eliminate them. Using a condom is always a good idea.

You can get more information about it here:

You should talk to a doctor before having sex so you can get information on how to protect yourself from STDs and unwanted pregnancies.

Perhaps you can see the school nurse by yourself and discuss your fears about cervical cancer.
I'm not sure how old you are, but if you have unprotected sex you can get a virus called HPV, which can cause cervical cancer. If you dont have the virus, there is a vaccine out to protect you from it. You need to have a pap smear to find out. You can always find a planned parent hood in your area and be seen without your father knowing.. you can see the nurse and get checked and have all your questions answered. It is free..Good Luck~ :)
I think you have a lot of unresolved issues here other than the fear of cervical cancer and it is probably best to speak to someone at school who can put you in touch with a student counsellor. You may not have properly grieved for your mother and the issues with your father sound like there is some deep-seated resentment there. Your father may be withdrawn from you because he is also dealing with grief and depression.

A family mediator may also help - please speak to a teacher or doctor soon.
I don't know what the chances are of you getting cancer, but if you are having sex you need to have an examination every year. Do not wait 3 years to begin. You should talk to your gyno about these concerns and get some type of birth control.
First of all, one of the reasons women get cervical cancer is having too many sex partners. (please don't be offended by this in regards to your mother's case, it's only one of the reasons.) I would keep that in mind and in check. About your dad, he doesn't have to know that you get a pap smear. You can go into planned parenthood and get one, since you are concerned about cervical cancer. The whole 3 year thing is the absolute latest you can get one. There is no limit for the earliest, so get one now if it will make you feel better. Also, take some pressure off of your dad and your relationship. He's just some guy right? Don't put the 'dad' label on him. You are two different people, and just because you are related, it doesn't mean you are going to be close. Biology and real life relationships are really not connected at all. Why not look up to another adult man in your life who is not like a stranger? It took me years to realize that my dad is just a mechanic, and I am a college student. We have nothing in common, and really don't get along. It feels so much better now that I don't expect him to be 'dad.' We have to place our fathers in the context of the entire world, not just our own little worlds. Also know that there is nothing you can do. You have to step back and don't try to hard to have a relationship with him. If he had wanted one, it would have already happened
Now go get a pap smear!
My mom has cervical cancer and she doesn't know how she ended up with it the best way to slim your chances of getting it by getting the shot to prevent HPV.... one of the main ways women get it. also you could talk to your doctor about other prevention methods.
Good luck and just talk to your doctor they can help answer any questions you may have
I just wrote a paper on this...

Most cervical cancer is caused by HPV which is a sexually transmitted disease which can also cause genital warts.

50% of people will have hpv at some point in their life. There's good news though. Most of the 40 some strains will eventually go away with no complications. There are about 10 strains that can cause long term problems like cervical cancer or genital warts. There's more good news. There's a new vaccine out (which i think is just awesome) that protects you from 4 of the high risk strains. This could prevent about 70% of the cases of cervical cancer and about 90% of the cases of genital warts.

I've read stuff that says you can't get cervical cancer if you don't have hpv but I'm going to assume that other things can cause cervical cancer...just not as often.

Just keep up-to-date with your pap smears and you'll head off any problems before they arise. pap smears can prevent most cervical cancer too.

Hope this helps you.
