When someone gets tested for cervical cancer.. is it also routine to get tested for HIV?

A girl Im dating swears that she was tested for HIV when she was also tested for cervical cancer and I simply don't believe her. If anyone can help me out here I would really appreciate it. Thanks

I worked in an ob-gyn office for about 5-6 yrs and this was not routine. Getting tested for cervical cancer is a woman having her pap smear test, which most guys hear about, but many dont really know what this test is and what it can show. Since the doctor has the do the test on the cervix, the doctor can see inside the vagina also and can see redness, bumps, ulcers, discharges, etc u get the picture. The pap smear can show cervical cancer which is highly treatable, she may have HPV (human papilloma virus), which is usually the cause of cervical cancer and some time of HPV are genital warts which can be only seen on the pap smear. Herpes is seen but rarely because it prefers the warmer moist places but it is possible to see cells on a pap smear. You can see sperm if you have had sex the nite before, all kinds of things, but in all my time with my doctor, who was sooooo thorough, he never just automatically order an HIV test.. He might have suggested one according to certain questions. But HIV test comes in 3's ok. You take 3 different tests to make sure they are all negative.. The last one will be a year after the first test. If that last test was negative, your fine. Maybe she misunderstood what test she was having. Good luck.

All I know is that HIV tests are never "routine" and you have to specifically ask your doctor to test you. Why not go and get tested together?

it's possible. A HIV test is not done with a swab like a pap test, though, if that's what she's saying. HIV tests are only done with blood. She could have gotten her blood test done the same day though. Usually they test you when you ask them to, whether that is the same day you get your pap test or not.

This would very from office to office, but it would make seance for OBGYNs to test for HIV every chance they get. It sounds reasonable.

i don't know about in other offices, but in every GYN office i've ever been to, you had to ask for the blood test. they don't just do it. when they screen for cervical cancer, they do the pap test with the swab. it could be routine in her GYN office, or maybe she asked for it. in any case, it's ok if you go together and get tested together.

It could happen. My gynocologist always offers HIV tests to her patients when they are in for their yearly pap and physical. It is up to the patient if they get it or not but it's offered.
