Is Chiropractic mostly Placebo?

Sure there is an element of reality to Chiropractic. It temporarily makes people feel better. Once in awhile it makes a serious difference. But what about those techniques where they barely touch you? Is it all in the mind?

The techniques you are talking about are applied kinesiology, NET, BEST, and some others that really get off into "energy" work - i.e., not Chiropractic at all in my book but a type of faith healing under the guise of science.
The vast majority of chiropractors practice Diversified, Gonstead, Activator, and a few other techniques such as upper cervical specific and some techniques involving special devices, tables and apparatus. If you stick with these you will be pretty safe. If you don't your wallet will be taken for a ride in my opinion.
As far as a placebo, every treatment has at least some placebo effect, including medicines given to you by your medical doctor and even surgery. But if you are asking is that all there is to Chiropractic, the answer is no - Chiropractic has been shown to work very well in many independent, controlled studies by major medical and governmental organizations. I have upper back and neck problems and see a chiropractor. My husband had scoliosis (S-shaped spine) and he goes to a chiropractor to continue treatment so as not to get that S-shape back. In my opinion, if the doctor isn't working on your back and neck and is barely touching you in these areas, I would say it is false. Chiropractic is not a "spa" type treatment like a massage. The chiropractor has to pull, twist, and stretch the vertebrae in your spine back in alignment and you should hear and feel snaps and pops. And you should feel, almost instantly, a relief of pain. These procedures can reduce headaches, too.
Personal
Nope. A Placebo is a pill taken internally that has no medicinal benefits.
Chiropractic doctors actually adjust your joints and correct imbalances between them. They physically move them and physically correct problems. Not to mention that their X-Rays and millions of clients throughout the world can prove that they work.

There are some Chiropractic adjustments that don't NEED harsh pushing. Some methods require that the Chiropractor doesn't need to to "barely touch you"... it just depends on what is needed.
Personal experience with a few years of Chiropractors and talking to people in the industry
I'm a chiropractor, and I'm not sure which techniques you are talking about...
but moving joints that are fixated does change biomechanics and reduces irritation to the proprioceptors & nociceptors (pain and motion receptors) in the spine-- as well as taking pressure & irritation off the major nerve roots & discs.

I get referrals on a regular basis from MDs of all sorts, primary care, neurologists, orthopedists etc.

So, I dont know what techniques you refer to when you talk about someone barely touching a patient... I do all sorts of techniques, but I do touch patients & have a variety of ways I adjust them-- pushing, pulling "cracking" and I also occasionally use a hand held instrument for people with osteoporosis or who are very tender or for children.
