Chiropractic and MS?

I have MS and I am getting spinal allingments from a chiropractor for psoriasis. My neuro says to avoid the neck, there is too much risk, but my chiro says she provide a better treatment with some neck manipulation. I completely trust her and want to seek the neck manipulation. What is the chance of injury to the neck with manipulation? Is the risk worth it?

People with MS can get neck irritation especially with forward flexion as you know.
No special reason that people with MS are in any more danger than anybody else that I know of! I think your neurologicst is being overcautious.
Just talk to your chiropractor and tell her your concerns - I'm sure she has a way to treat you that will be comfortable. Source(s): Doctor of Chiropractic
Absolutely not. The biggest risk from chiropractic adjustments is in the neck. One mistake and you could have a stroke, no joke. If you have other medical issues, and I see you do, you definitely should stay away from the neck. Listen to the neurologist over the chiropractor every time. Chiropractors have benefits but they are very far down totem pole of doctors.
The chances of having an adverse reaction to a neck manipulation are so rare I can't believe they are even an issue. In your particular case, MS, you might have an increased risk over the normal populace, but their is no study that shows this. The best thing would be to have your chiropractor discuss your particular case with the neurologist to determine a course of treatment.

I find it more strange that the chiropractor is treating you for psoriasis.

Spinal manipulation of the neck does have a small risk, there is a chance of injury to the vertebral artery which may lead to a cerebral vascular accident or stroke.
However, if manipulation is performed by a properly trained chiropractor the risk is very low and much less than having a severe reaction to a over the counter medication such as aspirin or ibuprofen. Millions of cervical manipulations are performed every year by chiropractors, yet chiropractors pay the lowest malpractice premiums of all primary health care providers. This is because chiropractic treatment is a very safe form of health care. If you trust your chiropractor allow her try to give you her best treatment that's what your paying for.
