What happens when you have chlamydia?

I know it stops you having children but how?

Chlamydia is almost always transmitted through sexual intercourse and the symptoms are as follows, in women they are cystitis, a change in vaginal discharge and mild lower abdominal pain, all of which are quite common and could be the explanation for all sorts of conditions, the bottom line is if in doubt, get checked out. If you don't get tested and your symptoms do turn out to be chlamydia it could lead to PID, pelvic inflammatory disease, this causes damage to the fallopian tubes which carry eggs from your ovaries to the womb, they then become blocked and it becomes very difficult to get pregnant normally, it is possible though and what can happen is what's called an ectopic pregnancy where the baby develops in the fallopian tubes and can cause numerous difficulties.

In men, symptoms are discharge from the penis, and mild irritation at the tip which can go away after 2 to 3 days, the male thinks the problem has gone away but the infection is harboured, problems that arise from a man not getting tested and having chlamydia are sperm function and male fertility, inflammation of the testicles especially in the under 35's, pain, swelling and redness around the affected scrotum, in rare cases, it can trigger joint inflamation which is difficult to treat.

So basically if you think you are infected, or have any problems regarding your well being, just go to your Doctor and let them check you out.

In women, untreated infection can spread into the uterus or fallopian tubes and cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). This happens in up to 40 percent of women with untreated chlamydia. PID can cause permanent damage to the fallopian tubes, uterus, and surrounding tissues. The damage can lead to chronic pelvic pain, infertility, and potentially fatal ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy outside the uterus). Women infected with chlamydia are up to five times more likely to become infected with HIV, if exposed.

In pregnant women, there is some evidence that untreated chlamydial infections can lead to premature delivery. Babies who are born to infected mothers can get chlamydial infections in their eyes and respiratory tracts. Chlamydia is a leading cause of early infant pneumonia and conjunctivitis (pink eye) in newborns.

Hope this helps!

just to add that chlamydia is asymtomatic (no symptoms) in 80% of women who have it. Absence of pain and discharge after unprotected sex does not indicate that you have not contracted the infection .
Use condoms guys

that's only if you have it for ages. It inflames your ovaries and blocks the Fallopian tubes. You would be in terrible pain if you had this.
