My best friend was raped and possibly got chlamydia...? |
I don't know what I can do for her. She doesn't want to take any legal action because she is afraid of what her parents will say and their reputation. I keep trying to convince her that she needs to report it before he does it to someone else and that he can't get away with it. But she won't do it. What can I do for her? I know your situation - my (ex) best friend was raped some years ago and her life fell apart. What I want you to understand is that she's probably humiliated beyond belief, terrified of reliving the event if it went to trial and she does not know how to cope. She does need to report it, but for many women, reliving that is pure torture. You also need to be aware of the fact this may well cause her a breakdown - you can stay by her side, but if she needs room to breathe, give it to her. For me, it was torture watching my friend go through it, and to this day, she relives the attack and when suffers anxiety disorder and is on anti-depressants. You must remember she's going to need time to deal - especially if she a virgin prior to the attack (losing your virginity is such circumstances is horrific). I wish you both all the best and I'm glad to see someone who is so concerned for her friend's welfare. Another warning for you: if it were to go to trial, you may be asked to speak about how the attack has affected her, from your point of view. Also, if you were one of the first people she told, chances are the police will also want to talk to you for any details you have. Call her a Fsking Moron. Screw reputation it's a bloody crime that needs to be punished. It won't "Hurt" a reputation to do the right thing. Be her friend and respect her decision. She has a point. If you want to be a real good friend, then change the world, or at least your own backyard, so that women who get raped don't feel ashamed. I don't want to say this, but technically you can report the crime and have the police talk to her, but that isn't something a friend would do. You could also settle it the old fashioned way and have a group of your friends destory his car or spray paint "rapist" on it. Of course, I stronly recommend you let your friend do "what's right for her". You may also want to remind her that the time is now, as the statute of limitations may prevent her from changing her mind years down the road. As much as she will hate it, you need to report this to the police yourself.
