How do you lower cholesterol naturally? I.E No prescriptions?

How do you lower cholesterol naturally? I.E No prescriptions?

Remember that cholesterol is made in the liver, therefore there are two sources....that which your own liver makes, and that which comes in the diet, through animals (who also have livers)

So...first look at your dietary sources. If you eat a lot of red meat, dairy and eggs....cut back. Look at portion size as well as how often you eat those things. If you drink whole milk, switch to skim/1%/2%. If you use butter switch to margarine, olive oil etc.
Do you get lots of fibre, fresh fruit and vegetables.? Think of fibre as a sponge that soaks up extra cholesterol, and there are anti-oxidants in the fruits and veggies.
Do you get much exercise? That boosts the level of HDL ("good" cholesterol)

However even a strict diet can only lower it 20-30%,

If the diet isn't the problem, then you have a problem with your liver making more than you need for normal metabolism. (You actually need cholesterol, it is an important building block of other things in your body) You can't change your genetic makeup.

There really aren't many herbal or "natural" products that have been shown to do much about cholesterol other than common sense diet. Oat bran didn't really pan out after initial high hopes. Garlic is the most well known, but it's results in good studies are modest. It can't hurt and may help. There is no convincing evidence that anything else works very well.

"statin" type drugs definitely do lower the cholesterol, and probably have other effects that lower the risk of heart attack and stroke. They aren't for everybody and they are over prescribed for sure.

And there is a lot of controversy about cholesterol in the medical community at present. Is it really the culprit or is it just a marker? It's possible that the apolipoprotiens are more important, though they have been difficult and expensive to test for in the past.

So it's possible there will be a new approach to cholesterol and its importance in the future...but present wisdom says it should be kept low.

Do NOT go to websites such as those advertised to the right or as suggested by the person below me. They will sell you products for sure. They have no evidence, just testimonials. 1000 testimonials is not equivalent to one double blind study. The products will lower the amount of money in your bank account, but will not make much difference in your cholesterol levels.

Sorry someone objects to my answer, but it is entirely factual and evidence based.

Eat less cholesterol.
However, only about 20 - 30% of your blood cholesterol comes from your diet. The rest is produced in your system. There is very little that has been shown effective. Red yeast rice is sure to be mentioned, it contains the same active ingredient as the prescription drug Mevacor.

Besides fish oil, garlic, oats and apple cider vinegar there are lots of other natural remedies that you can find in a web search for "high cholesterol" + "natural remedies".

You can try tachini made by sesame. It is very good for this reason, and sweet!

Foods that you can focus on including more of in your daily eating to aid in lowering your cholesterol levels are ~ barley, cruciferous vegies such as broccoli and cauliflower, eggplant, fish oil supplements ~ EPA and DHA, however, these can interfere with normal blood clotting so do not use if you are taking blood thinners unless your physician says so, ginger as a supplement, lentils such as pinto beans, lima beans, navy beans, kidney beans, monounsaturated oils such as olive oil, peanut and canola, onions, pectin found in apples and grapefruits, polyunsaturated oils such as sunflower, corn and safflower, raw carrots, red peppers, rice bran, vitamin C rich foods ~ leafy and green vegies, citrus fruits such as limes and lemons and oranges, strawberries .... vitamin C rich foods will also assist in lowering blood pressure and aid in eliminating any constipation issues you may have and Vitamin E rich foods such as leafy green vegies, whole wheats and vegetable oils, whole grain cereals and eggs ....... vitamin E rich foods will also assist in any issues you may have with bad circulation ie ~ cold hands and feet鈾?br>
There's quite a few things that may be undermining your efforts to lower your cholesterol levels or could even be raising them such as ~

smoking
caffeine
stress
refined sugar
the pill (if you're female)鈾?br>
Remember, no food nutrient or supplement is a magic bullet; a low fat diet and regular exercise are still necessary to lower high cholesterol鈾?br>
CHEERS

Garlic, either in pill form, you can get odourless, or real garlic. Also pomegranate juice. You only need about two ounces a day and it lowers it significantly.

I would suggest really researching the cholesterol hypothesis (if you haven't already)....don't buy into the fad, find out for yourself, is "high cholesterol" really bad for your health? Why? It's at least worth a look, Educate yourself! :)

Let's start with the root of the problem.
*Poor diet, especially one high in cholestrol, saturated fats, and refined carbohydrates
*Inactivity
*Hereditary tendency to high cholestrol
*Diabetes, insulin resistance
*Hypothyroidism
*Stress

its an all natural remedy you can buy at any health food store its called cholesterol off its about 40.00 but its a big bottle my mom and dad both use it and have been of their lipitor for over 6 months..give it a try

Red rice yeast, cholestoff made by Nature Made. this is natural plant sterols that remove cholesterol from bile in your gut. Soluble fiber will do the same, so eat your oat bran, or metamucil. also watch the saturated fat as this will raise cholesterol levels.

I did it successfully with Quaker oatmeal . Only use the old fashioned raw and uncooked. Not the instant type. The instand is processed and doesn't work.
Try with milk and cinnamon and or a little maple syrup.
It tastes great and in a couple of weeks you will be very suprised at how your cholesterol will begin to drop and stimulate your body to do what its supposed to do to contol it and keep it balanced naturally.

Stop eating anything with a face on it.
Start eating 30 grams of fiber a day.
Start exciercising.
Drink, Drink, Drink, WATER

Vegetarian diet.

Vegan would be even better for lowering cholestrol as you would also avoid cheese and all dairy products, which are full of cholesterol.

There has been a lot of information on the web about cinammon in trials.

Hello, there is actually alot of natural and alternative ways you can reduce your cholesterol! I am surprised that educated adults can advise otherwise especially seings cholesterol is affected by diet and lifestyle primarily, unless it is a hereditary cause. Anyways, one of the important things you need to think about when reducing cholesterol is not only cutting out animal fats and foods high in saturated fats but you want to also increase foods that increase you HDL. HDL is the "good" cholesterol. So for a really basic plan i would increase exercise and water intake, take fish oils with a high EFA so preferably liquid form, lecithin tablets, eat as many green veg as possible. Cut out refined foods and replace with fruit.
Alternative medicine is the best chance you have otherwise you may need to go on pharmaceuitcal drugs to reduce cholesterol which you will be on for the rest of your life, these drugs have had major side effects printed in medical journals (so no Dr can deny that evidence)!!!!
