I have cholesterol total of 102, this is below the normal range. Should I be concerned?

I have a total cholesterol of 102, here is the breakdown:

* HDL cholesterol: 53
* Cholesterol/HDL ratio: 1.9
* LDL Cholesterol, calculated: 43

I don't get why the report says my total is 102, even though 53+43 = 96! In any case, the total number of 102 was highlighted in my diagnostics report since it is not in the normal range of 125-200. Should I be concerned?

I lift weights so I know that cholesterol is useful as a precursor to certain hormones.

Should I increase my cholesterol intake to make sure I'm in range? My doctor said it was low but said that was okay and that I can generally eat more cholesterol foods if i want...

I am 173 lbs, 27 years old male who exercises regularly and has a vegetarian diet that includes dairy, legumes and moderate amount of soy as the primary sources of protein.

thanks to everyone who replied! I'll definitely check out that book on the cholesterol con, and butter is a definite quick and easy fix! I suppose I am lucky that I can just hopefully change my diet a little bit and fix it up.

Talk to you Doc. Consider yourself lucky.

i think there are people who would like to have that score for themselves, stop bragging!! haha!!

Having a low cholesterol level decreases your immunity and resistance to colds and flu. I suggest you read more about cholesterol. I just read the Great Cholesterol Con by Anthony Colpo, its very interesting reading. I do agree with him about most of it and its stated that people with higher cholesterol levels don't get sick very often. I agree with that. My level is a little high and I work out and watch what I eat. I don't really get sick and rarely have a cold...........

Cholesterol is actually needed in nerve functioning. I would add cholesterol products to your diet. It is okay for you to have butter on your bread, etc.
