Total cholesterol was 213 in Dec and LDL was 104. Now in March total is 230 and LDL is 140? |
I got my cholesterol checked in Dec, My total cholesterol was at 213, and my LDL at 104. Three months later, my total is now at 230 and my LDL is at 140. Is such an increase even possible in 3 months? I've been exercising and eating better the last three months. I would understand if my cholesterol stayed the same, but I do not understand an increase. I do smoke, but I have for years. Please help I'm concerned about my health. Many things can cause cholesterol to rise. In particular, stress, illness or injury. Cholesterol also rises naturaly as we age, but probably not the extent that yours has. A diet high in processed carbs an oxidised foods (most commercial vege oils) may also cause this. The answer to your question is yes, it can increase in 3 months and bravo to your doctor for monitoring it so well. You have hypercholesterolemia, and depending on genetic factors, and how well you control the cholesterol and saturated fats in your diet, may not be able to be reduced by diet alone. This does put you at increased risk for heart disease (along with smoking, this is a double whammy). If you have a family history of heart disease, or high cholesterol, then you must quit smoking, and consider getting a prescription for a cholesterol lowering medication (a 'statin drug) in addition to continuing your diet and exercise changes. Talk with a dietician, there may be areas of 'hidden fat' in your diet. Talk with your doctor about other stratagies for lowering your cholesterol. Keep a daily food diary to see what you really eat over a week. |
