I am taking Statin. My cholesterol is 4.7 and I would like to take the statins at alternative days. Is this OK

I started in April last year. My cholesterol is now controlled. I feel that taking Statins everyday can cause me more harm than good. I read some medical articles and one in particular said that people taking statins having normal chaolesterol level are at risk of devopping cancerogenous cells. I welcome your answers in this matter. Many of my friends are asking the same question. I do not know what the dependency of this drug can be and if indeed one have to take it for the rest of ones life. Your help is much appreciated.

The only obvious answer is go to the docs, but just a few points which might be helpful. Your cholesterol is at a reasonable level now (interesting to know the type of statin and dosage you are taking) but much controversy surrounds statins.
1) Should we take them for life?
2) The depletion of essential enzymes. CQ-10 for instance
3) Side effects: muscle pain, kidney problems

Many doctors don't appear to have time these days to discuss the true implications of long term drug taking and it's worth addressing panels like this so that at least you are able to ask certain questions. Apart from the 3 above:

Is Niacin a better alternative?
By improving the function of my liver...can I improve my lipid profile?
Are there any other dietary actions I can take in the light of the latest information available?
Red yeast rice?
And the one you started with, if none of the above apply; can I reduce my dosage? He/she may decide to cut your dosage but it's likely he/she will recommend daily rather than every two days...

25 million people take statins in the USA and although there have been problems, on the global scale, it appears to be reasonably well tolerated. However, you are right to question the norm rather than to return robot-like to the doctor and ask for more pills....

Your doc will have a target figure in his head for your appropriate level (i hope) based upon certain factors: i.e. age, medical history, family history, sex and lifestyle. Ask he/she what it is!!!! More doctors these days prefer the measure HDL/Total cholesterol which gives an indication of good cholesterol versus bad. This is good to know.....

Am I a Doctor?
Can I tell you it's ok to miss your medication?
Is it a good Idea to take medical advice from complete strangers?
Let me help you with these questions- the answer begins with "N" and ends with "O"

Go to the...wait for it...that's right- DOCTOR.

You should check with your doctor as each individual is different and what works for one may not for all.

You cannot become addicted to a statin (if that's what you mean by dependency). But it's possible that you could be moved onto a lower dose. It's unlikely that you'll ever be taken off statins by your doctor, unless you have really excellent diet and exercise habits.
You must discuss your worries with your doctor. It's not acceptable for you to halve your dose by only taking one every two days; your body should have a steady intake of the drug to have the proper effect.
Remember, most trials of statins do show that the benefits far outweigh the risks.
