Why does eating whole grains helps remove cholesterol from our bodies? |
When we eat it, how does it remove the cholestesterol from our bodies? What's in it that helps remove cholesterol? What other foods helps remove cholesterol? I know omega 3 and oatmeal helps. Whole grains contain fiber, a water-insoluble starch. Fiber is binding; what that means is, when fiber moves through the digestive system, it comes into contact with cholesterol, which comes from your food and your body also produces it to make bile. When the fiber meets the cholesterol, it catches and binds to the fiber as it passes through. Because the body cannot digest fiber, it is sent to the colon. Fiber increases dietary bulk and fuller stools and the cholesterol is carried out of the body during elimination. Anything containing fiber will help remove cholesterol, such as whole grain bread, high-fiber cereals, fruits and vegetables. They don't remove cholesterol exactly, they help reduce the amount of fat absorbed by the body and keep matters moving along down the line. Whole grains also contain large amounts of the various B complex vitamins, which are used by the body to regulate and produce cholesterol. Niacin in particular, found in abundance in whole grains, is very useful in treating high cholesterol levels. The body actually manufactures it's own cholesterol, from the fat you eat and from body stores of a different form of fat. Eating less fat and eating whole grains helps the body maintain a balance by not dumping in large amounts of fat for it to deal with, without the tools to do it. Think of a whole grain like a sponge. It literally absorbs the cholesterol and moves it out of your body as waste. |
