What foods are good to increase good cholesterol ?

We use olive oil and Hi fiber /grains/2% milk /Fish /Skinless chicken Fresh fruit berries

LDL cholesterol is like the delivery trucks that deliver cholesterol to the cells for repairs, making cell walls and hormones etc. It is what some people call bad cholesterol but it is fine in the right balance

HDL cholesterol is like the garbage trucks that collects the extra cholesterol from the cells and takes it back to the liver. It is what some poeple call good cholesterol.

When there are too many LDL's and not enough HDL's you end up with too much cholesterol in the cell and the blood and you are at risk of plaque formation, heart attach, stroke etc.

I know that is a childish way of explaining, but there you go.

Best way to cut down on the LDL's and raise the HDL's is lowering dietary saturated fat. Saturated fat is found in meat and packaged foods like crisps and cakes.

Consuming the oils you mentioned along with fish can help increase the amount of HDL. Using olive oil can also replace some of the saturated fat that raises LDL.

Fiber can stop cholesterol reabsorption from the large intestine. Cholesterol is secreted with bile and is reabsorbed. But consuming high fiber with a meals can stop this reabsorption (it only works if you consume fiber with a meal though)

Good cholesterol (HDL) can be increased by substituting foods that contain trans and saturated fat for monosaturated fats such as canola oil and olive oil. Peanut butter actually also contains monosaturated fat (nuts are mostly quite good). Apparently cranberry juice might also increase HDL levels.Other good sources are foods rich in omega-3 (like salmon and walnuts), soluble fiber (such as oats, beans, veggies and fruits), whole grain, soy products (like tofu) and even the occasional glass of wine.

For the foods you mentioned, it might be better to substitute that 2% milk for either soy milk or skim; make sure that the fish you consume are cold water fish (salmon, trout) and stick to chicken breasts, instead of darker cuts. Turkey breasts and some cuts of pork (tenderloin) are equally healthy. Avocados are also supposed to be excellent.

It is also recommended that people excersive, keep a wealthy weight and avoid smoking to help increase HDL levels and fight off "bad" cholesterol.

Take Omega 3 supplements. Exercise

You are on the right track by eating unsaturated fats. Nuts are also high in unsaturated fat.

They say oats increase good cholesterol.

NUTS!!!!...ALMONDS, WALNUTS, PEANUTS...YEA
