What is NORMAL Cholesterol -?

My doc says I have high cholesterol. How hig is higher than normal. This is new to me.

Didn't ask how high it was, maybe I should of - Huh?

Anyhow, what is normal for a 34.5 year old?

Thanks!

Susakin- What is a normal cholesterol level?

When discussing cholesterol levels, it is more appropriate to realize that there is a spectrum of risk: that is, your level is not "normal" or "abnormal". Rather, the higher the level of cholesterol, the higher the risk of developing a problem.

It鈥檚 more reasonable to talk about "desirable" levels of cholesterol. Experts disagree on exactly what numbers should be used. For the individual patient, the lower your level, the lower your risk of coronary artery disease and other forms of arteriosclerosis.

The NCEP (National Cholesterol Education Program) recommended what was best for most people. Note their recommendations regarding cholesterol levels.
For the population as a whole:
Desirable (less than 200)
Borderline (200-239)
High (greater than or equal to 240)
Future changes will likely lower the desirable level to about 180. Medicines, exercise, and proper diet all help.

When you ask your doctor for your numbers, be sure to get the breakdown of LDL, HDL and Triglycerides. You can then look at the ratio of LDL to HDL.

It's not as complicated as it sounds, but it is a very important distinction rather than just knowing an overall number.

See http://www.smart-heart-living.com/choles... for further explanation and how to determine your ratios.

Good luck!

Normal/healthy is anything below 200.

Borderline high is 200-240.

Anything above 240 is considered high.

under200 but you really should stay under 180
