If eggs are considered GOOD cholesterol, how does that help your health?

If eggs are considered GOOD cholesterol, how does that help your health?

Cholesterol comes from one's diet and is also manufactured by the liver. It is a necessary lipid. Dietary cholesterol is not "good" or "bad." Nor is liver-manufactured cholesterol for that matter. Cholesterol is cholesterol. It is transported through the blood via lipoproteins. Some of the lipoproteins are high density (HDL's,) some low density (LDL's) and some very low density(VLDL's.)

The low density lipoproteins carry cholesterol from the liver to the cells where it is needed. The high density lipoproteins carry excess cholesterol from the cells to the liver. From there, it can be prepared for excretion. No matter what type of lipoprotein is carrying the cholesterol, that cholesterol is the same.

If the LDL's are small and very abundant and or the HDL's not abundant enough, problems can arise. There can be more cholesterol delivered to the cells without enough of the excess being transported to the liver for excretion. The small LDL particles can also become trapped in the arteries, contributing to plaque.

So, the cholesterol in eggs themselves is neither good nor bad, as is the case with any cholesterol, in and of itself. It is the lipoproteins that transport the cholesterol and their availability that are at issue. Although low and high density lipoproteins are essential to the body's health, as is cholesterol, when not enough HDL's are available to transport excess cholesterol from the cells, and lots of LDL's are continuing to transport cholesterol to the cells, problems can occur. It is the HDL's and LDL's themselves, which are simply transporters of what is the same cholesterol, that people think of as "bad" and "good" cholesterol.

Actually the cholesterol is found primarily in the yolk. however, the white has almost no nutritional value other than having about half of the protein and most of the sodium content. Dietary cholesterol is not necessarily "good cholesterol". An egg has aproximately 213 mg of cholesterol and for a healthy person it is recommendended to ingest less than 300mg a day, so... if you have an egg just limit the rest of your high cholesterol sources for the day. If you just love your eggs but need to watch your cholesterol, try using egg whites.

Good cholesterol or HDL ( high densiity lipoprotien) carries cholesterol away from the arteries to the liver where it is expelled, and reduces the buildup on aterial walls.

LDL or bad cholesterol (low density lipoprotein) contributes to the risk of heart disease
