Daily consumption of cholesterol and burning it off.

Hi im a HS freshman-to-be football player... I work out about everyday, if not every other day. I've been waking up this summer with nothing to eat, so when that occurs i would whip myself up some eggs. Now i checked up the nutrition facts on eggs and it shows that its very high in cholesterol... Sometimes I eat 2, sometimes i eat 1. But today i ate 2... and it adds up to be around 350-400mg of cholesterol... Im pretty sure im headed to running stairs and doing drills today... Just wondering is eating eggs OK for me if i workout/run daily? Does lifting and/or running burn cholesterol? THANKS!

Exercise will improve your cholesterol ratio. There are two kinds of cholesterol- HDL (high density lipoprotein) and LDL (low density lipoprotein). HDL is considered good cholesterol, in that it scours your arteries, cleaning junk out of them. LDL is bad, in that it tends to accumulate along artery walls and cause heart problems. So basically you want a high HDL and a low LDL. And exercise raises HDL (good); I theorize that this is your bodies natural way of making sure your heart is primed and healthy for exercise.

There is a lot of controversy about eggs when it comes to cholesterol.
Yes, eggs are very high in dietary cholesterol, but most blood cholesterol is synthesized by your own body. High intake of saturated fat has been linked to high LDL blood cholesterol, so eat food containing saturated fat (mainly dairy products and meat) in moderation, or choose leaner, lower fat versions of these items.

As far as exercise, speaking for myself, I always run and generaly exercise better when I load up on healthy carbs, such as bread, oatmeal and vegetables. Try to put at least an hour between eating and exercise though. Eat high protein foods, such as eggs, after a workout, when your body is primed to absorb the nutrients in them.

Cholesterol ratios can be improved by many foods, the most promising of which is whole grain oatmeal, preferrably steel cut oats, which are higher in soluber fiber that lowers LDL cholesterol. Grapefruit, apples, nuts and almost any whole plant food will help you get and/or maintain a healthy blood cholesterol ratio.
