Which red wine is the best option for reducing cholesterol? |
From what I understand, one glass of red wine a day is good for when you're trying to reduce high levels of cholesterol... but are there any specific wines? Light, medium full bodied? How dry?? There are SOO many different kinds of reds. I'll list the simplest kinds for you, lightest to most full-bodied.... Pinot Noir Shiraz Mediterranean Reds (typically table reds) Red Zinfandel Merlot Cabernet Keep in mind that there are far far far more than I have listed, but this will give you a general idea. As far as reducing your cholesterol, although it is true red wine contains an antioxidant that prevents the buildup of fatty deposits in the arteries, there are risks connected with excessive alcohol intake. Higher intakes of vegetables, whole grains, fish and olive oil may achieve the same heart healthy benefit without the risk. Besides, alcohol actually increases the risk of other potential killers including cancer. Dryness of a wine (tannines) deals only with taste. The longer the skins of the grape are left in the fermenter or the aging barrel, the drier the wine. Just find what tastes good to you. http://www.turism.md/eng/section/224/... Detailed testing in Sweden indicated that grape juice (not from concentrate) worked as effectively as red wine. For me italians. Chianti is a good choice. Also wines from Sangiovese region. My italian roots. |
