Family member just diagnosed with a brain lymphoma, eligible for a clinical trial..?

clinical trial called Blood brain barrier disruption which could extend her life 10+ years. She has the attitude that she's going to die and that all is hopeless. Will she be required to take a psychological exam before she is accepted into this program? I would think that if someone has given up mentally, then no treatment will help them and it would be a waste of the doctor's time to accept her. Does that make sense? We're trying to get her to understand that her physical and mental well being go hand in hand.

Hello.

You are right. The physical and mental well-being do go hand in hand. I have had some experience with research studies and have found that it really depends on the study. Sometimes the researcher sees it as an advantage to have a subject who feels like, well, another subject would probably feel in her situation. After all, we are all human and each person will react differently to situations and it would be good to have all kinds of reactions in a study. And maybe she will even be in the control group (randomly) - who knows.

There are other researchers who are anal about weeding out those who don't fit the ideal subject - probably good for the validity and reliability of the study. It is all up to the researcher(s) though and how the study is being conducted. Sorry, I know that isn't a whole lot of help. But if she wants to participate in the study - I would at least give it a shot.

You are right, though. The physical and mental are very much connected.
