How do i get rid of a cold sore?

my sons aeenager and suffers consontny with cold sores

You need to talk to your doctor about Valtrex. The absolute best treatment for cold sores is a prescription medication in pill form called Valtrex. It was intended for genital herpes, but cold sores are caused by the same family of viruses, and Valtrex stops colds sores in their tracks. None of the other treatments come close to the effectiveness of Valtrex, not the ointment Zovirax, and not Abreva or anything else. Ask your doctor about it to see if you would be a good candidate for the meds. My doctor prescribed it for me for cold sores about five years ago and after taking it only a couple of times I hardly ever get a cold sore any more, and I was having several attacks a year. On the rare occasions that I do get one, it is gone almost immediately when I take the medication - in about a day. Ask your doctor about it.
In the meantime, here are a couple of informative links.

The only over the counter medication that has been proved to work is Abreva, but it is expensive like 20 dollars for a nail size tube. You can use it when you feel the cold sores are coming (it stops the herpes virus from spreading). If you get a prescription, antivirals like acyclovir or valcyclovir will work by taking the pills at the first sign of outbreak. valcyclovir or Valtrex is very expensive but you don't have to take it that often. acyclovir is cheaper but you to take it 3 times a day.

There are 2 parts to my answer, acute and chronic management.

First acutely provided you are dealing with a sore that is less than 72 hours old, topical acyclovir can be used. This is available as an ointment which need s to be applied 5 times a day, starting as near to the onset of the sore as possible. Hence one of the early adverts which said 'when you feel the tingle'. After 72 hours acyclovir is no longer worth applying and frequent dabbing on of surgical spirit will dry up the sore.

Technically there is no chronic management. However, if you can persuade his GP to occasionally prescribe a course of oral antiviral tablets, there is some anecdotal evidence that this increases the time between exacerbations.

aw the poor boy having a cold sore! i get around 3 a year and they are so annoying! i know how he must feel:(
well zovirak is the best but if u cant get 2 a pharmacy now put men's aftershave(or perfume will do) on it! it might sting but its worth it!
the main thing is not to let it dry up or it will get all scabby so keep it moisturised with Vaseline or something!!
good luck x x x

Hey,

The best cure for cold sores is preventing them of appearing in the first place.
There are some natural ways that are perfect for your sons condition.

At your local pharmacy, you can buy products that will help with cold sores.

Hope that helps!

You don't. They are b@stards. Sent from hell to ruin your life.

You could try Zovirax though.
