How do you prevent catching a cold?

Im going into hospital in 5 days for a Hysterectomy and everyone around me at work and at home has a cold!! Will the consultant still perform my operation if i have a cold? does anyone know how to prevent catching one in the first place??

Increase your immunity, eat citrus fruits (orange or sweet lime) daily.
Eat curd daily.
