Is it true that cold air makes you sick?

My parents always used to tell me to put a jacket on when i was going out on a cold day or else i would get sick. However, aren't sicknesses caused by pathogens or viruses attacking the body? So does cold air make you sick? Or does it just make it easier for you to get sick? Or nothing at all? please explain. =D

You are absolutely right about cold not getting you sick. It is pathogens and viruses and bacteria that does it. The only thing that the cold air does is enhance the symptoms of a sickness that is already there.

the flu and the common cold are caused by viruses. People get sick more often in the winter because they are exposed to each other more in the winter than in the summer. When it is cold outside, people tend to stay inside and are more likely to spread germs to one another. Also, because school is in session, kids are around each other all day and are not afraid to share their germs. With so many people in such close contact, the likelihood of passing germs is much higher when it is cold outside than when it is warm and people are outdoors. There is also evidence now that viruses spread more easily through dry air. When it is cold outside, the air is drier both outdoors and inside (where people have their heaters on) which may make it easier for germs to pass from one person to another. But it is not the cold weather that causes the cold, it just might make it easier to spread the virus.

No, it's not. The only reason that more people get sick in autumn and winter is because they spend more time cooped up indoors with other people who carry germs.

Coldness doesn't make you sick. It only makes you easier to get sick. Our body has a normal temperature of 37 deg celsius. If the normal body temperature increases or decreases, many body disturbances may happen like fever or hypothermia.
