Another cold sore? |
i only just had one in january and i think i've got another one exactly in the same spot as my last one! i don't feel under the weather (that's when i usually get them) but my monthly is due and i've had a bit of stress recently. anyway, it's not itchy or burning yet but it's white where the sore is starting and tingling a bit. any suggestions on how to avoid them in the future? i know it's a virus (i've had them pretty much all my life) but is there a way to suppress this virus? This is from the BBC health site http://www.bbc.co.uk/health/conditions/c... Cold sores are caused by a member of the herpes virus family, called herpes simplex. They occur on the lip, or just above or below it, and are caught through close contact with someone who has a cold sore. Infection usually occurs in childhood when someone's kissed by a family member who has a cold sore. The virus passes through the skin, travels up a nerve and hides in the nerve root until it's activated. When the virus is activated, it travels back to the skin, causing a tingling sensation. When the sore appears, it's itchy, painful and embarrassing because it's so noticeable. After the first attack, some people never have another one; others get them occasionally, while some get them quite often. Many things trigger attacks: colds and flu, menstrual periods, emotional upset, fatigue, bright sunlight and cold winds. Preventing recurrences involves avoiding those things known to trigger cold sores. So, make sure you always wear a lip balm containing UV protection and avoid sources of stress. Eating a healthy, balanced diet that's rich in vitamins A, C and E, zinc and iron is also important to keep the immune system strong. Make sure you get enough garlic, too; it has antiviral properties and can be taken fresh or in capsule form. Some people believe that the herb melissa, or lemon balm, is a good preventative. Make an infusion with some dried melissa leaves in boiling water, leave to cool, strain and store in a bottle. Apply it daily to the lips with cotton wool. What's the treatment? Many people know when a cold sore is on its way because they feel a tell-tale tingle. When this happens, applying a cream containing the drug aciclovir (available from chemists without prescription) may help to lessen the duration and severity of the attack. Any pain caused by a cold sore can be eased by applying a cold compress of witch hazel to the affected area or by taking paracetamol. It's important to always wash your hands after touching the cold sore and avoid putting your fingers near your eyes. I dont think so but Ive had them all my life too if someone comes up with a cure they will be very very rich! You can take steps to guard against cold sores, to prevent spreading them to other parts of your body or to avoid passing them along to another person: Avoid kissing and skin contact with people while blisters are present. The virus can spread easily as long as there are moist secretions from your blisters. In persons with depressed immune systems, the virus can be spread even after the skin appears to be healed. Avoid sharing items. Utensils, towels and other items can spread the virus when blisters are present. Keep your hands clean. Wash your hands carefully before touching another person when you have a cold sore. Be careful about touching other parts of your body. Your eyes and genital area may be particularly susceptible to spread of the virus. Avoid triggers. If possible try to avoid or prevent conditions that stress your body, such as getting a cold or the flu, not getting enough sleep or staying in the sun for long periods of time without applying sunblock. Use sunblock. Apply sunblock to your lips and face before prolonged exposure to the sun 鈥?during both the winter and the summer 鈥?to help prevent cold sores. I know people that get them, but they seem to get them more when they ate certain things. One friend anything she ate that was citrus, another person every time he ate chocolate, another person when they ate nuts, one would get a flare up when she was in the sun.. Diet could be a factor. Granted these were people that I knew that got them, and that is what they told me. plenty of water and fresh fruit and veg will help supress it, also its amazing what a good nights sleep can do for you. treat yourself to a camomile tea, a warm bath with 3 drops of lavender, no lights on it the bathroom, just 2 or 3 candles and that will work a treat. Yes in fact there is and it is simple and cheap. When you first feel the signs coming on begin taking L-Lysine to suppress the virus. This is an amino acid and you can find it in the vitamin area of your supermarket or drug store. You can find this information in Dr. David Santillo's book-"Natural Healing With Herbs". Keep in mind that your cycle and or stress can cause these outbreaks. I hope this helped. Good luck and God bless. Use abreva... From living with my little sister for 18 years i've watched her use just about anything anybody suggested.. (she gets major ones like a quarter size, once even bigger and it was like on her chin) the only thing that helps her is abreva. she just applys it more often than the directions suggest.. like 4-5 times a day.. Have you tried going to the doctor? in some cases there is a solution... I feel your pain.. Good luck...:) |
