I have a cold (runny nose, cough) and am DETERMINED not to take over-the-counter meds this time. Natural med? Tiffany's answer is a good one. Echinacea is an immune system strengthener but is only effective for short-term treatment. Don't take it daily for more than 2 weeks. Vitamin C is a powerful immune system support. 1000 mg/day is the recommmended dosage to prevent colds and common infections. If you still feel a cold coming on, increase the dosage to 1000 mg/ every 2 hours, combined with 2 Echinacea capsules. Take 1 zinc lozenge per day. Continue until bedtime, and if symptoms persist the next morning, continue for one more day. Symptoms should disappear. Once you have the cold, Vitamin C can shorten the duration, but the best approach is prevention. Remember, you are constantly surrounded by bacteria and viruses. They make you sick only when your immune system is suppressed. Eat right, de-stress with exercise, get enough rest, drink lots of water...and take your Vitamin C! echineaca, goldenseal, vitamin C. this is the triple threat to colds and viruses. it is more effective to take herbal remedies BEFORE you get sick or at the onset of symtoms but these will definately help it to go away sooner. also, look for herbal cold care tea. i cant tell you how effective the delivery of herbs in hot water is. get well soon! I have found that the best thing to do is to change my pillowcase every day. That keeps me from re-infecting myself. Tiffany knows what she's talking about. Echinacea goldenseal, lemon water and I use a tea called Throat Coat, which works great. Sleep with a lot of pillows, because elevation will help. Echinacea will help if taken before hand but the cold itself will strengthen your immune system as well as anything else. The cold virus has an incubation period of about 10 days. The symptoms occur at the end of the battle when your body is expelling the dead germs. so Lots of water! |
